Pageant - Pageant is a small UK based charity, which provides help with education in The Gambia. We have provided furniture and equipment to schools throughout The Gambia, and helped with the construction and renovation of classrooms, school kitchens, staff-rooms and sports facilities. Pageant provides a service whereby members can sponsor individual students to enable them to complete their education. Poor health can adversely affect students' educational attainments, so Pageant works with village communities in the fight against malaria - distributing mosquito nets, and encouraging the cultivation of Artemisia annua, a plant with proven anti-malarial properties. In the wider community Pageant is helping with adult literacy as well as providing micro-loans to enable women to start small businesses.

Microscopy Workshops in The Gambia

In The Gambia, science is taught almost exclusively as a theoretical subject because the schools generally have no resources to buy any equipment for practical lessons. Pageant has been able to supply donated microscopes to a few Gambian schools, but not all teachers have fully understood how to get the most benefit from these. To increase the number of Gambian schools able to benefit from practical microscopy we plan to run structured workshops for science teachers in The Gambia. They will cover the use and care of microscopes, with each teacher being given as much microscopy equipment as we can afford to take back to their schools. Pageant has recently been awarded £3,000 by the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) Vice President’s fund, which has enabled us to set up the first four workshops for February 2010, but we still need your donations to help fund as much equipment as possible for the 40 schools taking part. The impact of these workshops will be immense as, if each teacher interfaces with just 200 pupils, we will have introduced practical microscopy to 8,000 Gambian children. Please help - our target is £5,000.

Our costs for the first Microscopy Workshop in February 2010 came to £5200, so we have raised our target from the original £5000. We had a generous grant of £3000 from the Royal Microscopical Society VP Fund, a further RMS donation of £1,600 from their AMFES (A Microscope For Every School) fund and offline donations of £200, so we need to raise just £400 to clear our costs.
