Pageant - Pageant is a small UK based charity, which provides help with education in The Gambia. We have provided furniture and equipment to schools throughout The Gambia, and helped with the construction and renovation of classrooms, school kitchens, staff-rooms and sports facilities. Pageant provides a service whereby members can sponsor individual students to enable them to complete their education. Poor health can adversely affect students' educational attainments, so Pageant works with village communities in the fight against malaria - distributing mosquito nets, and encouraging the cultivation of Artemisia annua, a plant with proven anti-malarial properties. In the wider community Pageant is helping with adult literacy as well as providing micro-loans to enable women to start small businesses.

JTT Nursery School

Nursery schools in The Gambia are not part of the Gambian state education system. Some are funded by charities, and some are provided by local benefactors - often on a shoestring. JTT Nursery School is a typical Gambian nursery school and charges just £2 per term, which does not cover running costs. Pageant member Aris Harrison-Price has been helping the school with enthusiastic fundraising for many years and currently pays the salary for one of the teachers. The school currently occupies cramped and dilapidated premises in Talinding, a district of Serrekunda. High demand means that the single classroom is so overcrowded that many lessons are carried out in the open. They soon hope to move into new premises funded by the African Oyster Trust. The new school will have three good sized classrooms, with toilet and washing facilities. However, we still need help to fit out the new buildings and to cover running costs, so Pageant and Aris together are launching an appeal for donations specifically to secure the future success of JTT Nursery School and bring nursery education to more poor children.
