Charities

The Candlelighters Trust
Yorkshire's pre-eminent childhood cancer charity supporting children, teenagers and their families. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down in an instrant. Not just for the child bit for their parents, siblings and family friends. Priorities change and everyday concerns sudddenly seem trivial. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, physically emotionally and even financially. Helping and supporting those children and their families throughout that journey is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago and it is why we are still here today. The charity was founded and is still run by parents of children who have or have had cancer or leukaemia and the medical staff who treat them. This means that we understand the trauma and the turmoil of that diagnosis and how the support and care needed may differ from family to family. Whether it be through the support of our friendly staff and experienced counsellors, that "home away from home" environment we nurture on the ward inLeeds, or the vital research into new treatments, we are here to help. We fund essential staff and medical equipment at the children's cancer & leukaemia Unit in Leeds as well as the supply of toys, books, and age appropriate activities for both teenagers and children to enjoy while they are being treated. We also support the parents, siblings and family of children diagnosed with cancer, as everyone involved requires special help at times getting through the treatment and recovery process.
The Waterside Charitable Trust
The Waterside Charitable Trust aims to raise funds for health and youth programmes in Africa. It's main focus is currently in Kenya and in the city of Kisumu.

1095 miles for children's cancer and Kenya

Fundraiser:
James Ellis

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/1095miles

Hi, thanks for visiting my page and considering sponsoring me.

I'm running at least three miles a day, every day for a year without a day off in aid of two charities that are very close to me.

One, the Waterside Charitable Trust, raises money for health, sanitation, youth and social projects in the city of Kisumu in Kenya.

I have been to the slums of Kisumu and seen first hand just how horrible the situation is and it is pretty bad. Disease, poverty and despair can be seen on every corner.

The other is Candlelighters - a children's cancer trust based at St James's Hospital in Leeds. Established in 1976, it is a charity formed and run by parents of children who have or have had cancer, ex-patients and the medical staff who treat them.

It is also the chosen charity of Leeds Fans Remembrance, set up by the families of Leeds United fans Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight who were murdered following the team in Turkey 10 years ago this April.

I hope you'll find them worthy causes and donate to them... proceeds from my runs are being split 50/50.
