10 Ward JOA

Charity

City of Joy Aid, UK
City of Joy Aid, UK was formally established as a charity in 2000 by the French author Dominique Lapierre and his wife, following the enormous success of his book and film about the indomitable spirit of the poor of Calcutta: "The City of Joy". The charity works in conjunction with the French association "La cite de la joie de Dominique Lapierre" and both are dedicated to helping some of India’s most underprivileged people. City of Joy Aid, UK's particular focus is Udayan - a home providing medical care, schooling and vocational training for children affected by leprosy. Because Udayan was founded by an Englishman, the UK charity has a particularly close relationship with it and the 300 or so children cared for there. But Udayan is only one of eight humanitarian aid centres forming part of a network of NGOs, clinics, schools, rehabilitation centres and hospital boats in and around Calcutta.

It is 5000 miles from St Joan of Arc Catholic School in Rickmansworth, UK, to Udayan, a home for the children of leprosy sufferers in Calcutta, India. This Lent we intend to walk the 5000 miles from us to them!
We have been supporting Udayan in their amazing work, providing hope and opportunity for the poorest of the poor for over ten years. This Lent we hope every pupil at St Joan's will commit raising £5 as they each commit to walk, jog or run just 5 miles as part of our school virtual relay.
5000 miles = £5000!
UK fundraising for Udayan is facilitated through City of Joy Aid UK.
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
