Alzheimers Society - Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. There are 700,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025. Alzheimer's Society is a membership organisation, which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Many of our 25,000 members have personal experience of dementia, as carers, health professionals or people with dementia themselves, and their experiences help to inform our work. The Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through our branches, we touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. Every year, more than a million people make use of the information we provide. Through campaigning and lobbying we strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through our research programme we work to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment - and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

2010 Virgin London Marathon

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

Hey up me duck!

I'm doing a few things in 2010 and the main event is the Virgin London  Marathon!  I've always wanted to do a marathon and was able to get a place in the ballot.  I intend to use this place to raise as much money as possible during 2010 for the Alzheimer's Society.

We lost our beloved Dad in 2008 after his brave battle with dementia.  I'd like to give something back to a charity who made life a bit easier for him and my Mum.  I was privileged to run for the Alzheimer’s Society at the GMR2009 and wanted to do it again for them.

So, please encourage my progress over the next few months by sponsoring me for the main event.  I know everyone is asking for money but this is a charity that really needs funds to improve people's quality of life and raise awareness.  I know times are tough but it's worth it.  Plus my mate Pam does research funded by the Alzheimer's Society and we need to help her help find a cure. 

The big bonus is that if you sponsor me, you'll also be sponsoring me for the High Legh 10km in February, the Great Manchester Run in May, The Cheshire Triathlon and the Great North Run.  So there, the more you pay the more added value you get during 2010. 

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
