SOS Sahel UK
SOS Sahel UK is an international development charity that helps farmers and herders in the Africa's drylands (the Sahel region encompassing East and West Africa) to overcome their poverty and vulnerability. Over the last 25 years, we have successfully brought African communities together to share their knowledge, protect their rights and regenerate the environment on which they depend for survival. In 2010, SOS Sahel seeks support for its peace-buildilng and poverty reduction activities in the Kordofan and Eastern regions of Sudan. Here is how your donation could help: £10 could buy a bucket irrigation kit to enable farmers to grow fruit and vegetables through drip-irrigation. Subsistence farming can improve a family’s diet and generate valuable income that can be spent on education for children. £25 could pay for a month-long training course for about 35 women to learn about health and nutrition, midwifery and sewing at a Women’s Development Centre. £50 could support community literacy training for 10 people for 1 year. Literacy skills develop confidence and are the building blocks of strong local organisations. SOS Sahel is a lean and cost-effective charity with low overheads (35 staff in Sudan; 1 in the UK); dedicated to work in a region that does not have a high public profile. Donations from individuals are invaluable since they enable us to match institutional grants and thus lever greater funding. Please pledge your support to SOS Sahel UK today!

On Sunday, 30 July I will be riding in the Prudential RideLondon 100 mile cycle ride from London to Surrey and back. I hope to raise lots of ££ for the charity SOS Sahel International UK.

SOSS assists farmers and nomadic herders in the drylands that border the southern edge of the Sahara, especially Ethiopia and Sudan. SOSS supports communities in the management of their local forests, water points, rangelands and farmlands, for a sustainable and peaceful future. I am a trustee of SOSS and have visited its projects in Mali and and in the thornscrub of northern Kenya. I can therefore vouch for the great work that SOSS does.

By supporting SOS Sahel, you will be helping these marginalised communities to gain better control over the natural and economic resources they need for a secure and fulfilling life. Please find out more here:

Thank you very much for your support.
