2010 Virgin London Marathon

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

Your support means alot to me when I run the London Marathon in April 2010.

Oxfam works with others to overcome poverty and suffering. Here's why I chose to fundraise for Oxfam:

More than one billion people worldwide STILL live on less than US$1 a day

Worldwide, more than one billion people do not have clean, safe water

Each year, two million people, most of them children under five, die from diarrhoea

Every minute, a woman with no medical care dies in pregnancy or childbirth

Every day, 4,000 children die of diarrhoea caused by dirty water

Every hour, 300 people die of an AIDS-related illness

An estimated 33 million people live with HIV and AIDS, and around 8,000 of them die every day as a result – mostly in the world’s poorest countries.

Three-quarters of infected people go without the drug treatments that could help them.

72 million children are out of school (over two-thirds are girls)

771 million adults worldwide are illiterate (64 per cent are women)

Two million new teachers are needed today to provide kids with a decent education – and 15 million will be needed by 2015 to achieve education for all

Every year, more than 35 million people have to abandon their homes as a result of war, crime, political unrest, and natural disaster.

Poor countries are four times as likely as rich ones to experience major conflicts – around 30 are going on right now.

There were over 14 million refugees at the beginning of 2008. Most were from – and were hosted in – the developing world.

Natural disasters have more than doubled since the 1980s.

Oxfam works with others to overcome poverty and suffering. This is how your money will help:

£25 could buy five radios, used to broadcast health education and advice to remote communities.
£100 could buy essential medicines for a whole village for 6 months.
£250 could buy 10 teaching kits providing essential educational equipment.
£500 could pay for the care of 10 orphans or vulnerable children.
£1,700 could pay for a whole classroom

So please support in any way - big or small. Your support can, and does, make a difference. For every £1 you give to Oxfam, 80p is spent directly on emergencies, development and campaigning work. 11p is spent on support and governance. 9p is invested to generate future income.
