Guide Dogs
The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of blind and partially sighted people never leave home alone. Guide Dogs empowers visually impaired people to do that and relies totally on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service. We breed and train guide dogs which provide life changing mobility and there are currently 4,500 working guide dog partnerships in the UK. The full lifetime cost of a guide dog from birth to retirement is £48,500. We will not rest until blind and partially sighted people can enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.
Bowel Cancer UK
Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK. However it shouldn’t be because it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. We are the UK's leading bowel cancer research charity; determined to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer. We support and influence research, educate patients, public and professionals about bowel cancer and campaign for early diagnosis and best treatment and care for all those affected. We are determined to save lives from bowel cancer but we can’t do this without you. Support vital research and lifesaving work to stop bowel cancer. Together we can stop bowel cancer in our lifetime.
British Heart Foundation
The British Heart Foundation is the nation's heart charity. Every day they save lives, through pioneering research, providing vital information to help people reduce their own heart health risks, campaigning for change and supporting and caring for heart patients. Charity Registration No 225971
Medical Aid For Palestinians
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. Established in the aftermath of the massacre at Sabra and Shatila, today MAP delivers health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement. Working in partnership with local health providers and hospitals, MAP addresses a wide range of health issues and challenges faced by the Palestinian people. With offices located in Beirut, Ramallah and Gaza City, MAP responds rapidly in times of crisis, and works directly with communities in the longer term on health development.
Action Foundation
Action Foundation is an award-winning charity based in Newcastle upon Tyne supporting vulnerable refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants through our English language school and supported housing projects. Over the past 12 months we have directly supported over 1,000 beneficiaries to integrate, gain new skills, improve their confidence and well-being and increase their independence.

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters,

Thank you so much for visiting my fund-raising page. After a two-year break, this is my new effort to try to raise funds for five charities in the coming year.

I turn 60 on 27 August 2017 and am deeply thankful for reaching this milestone! I have set myself a fresh challenge of completing 600 miles [not kilometres] mostly through running and might include long walks! Most important of all, I hope to be able to raise at least £6,000 for the five charities and their respective shares:

Action Foundation (40%), a Newcastle-based charity, with their important work on refugees and asylum seekers, including the destitute among the latter. We live in times of massive human displacements caused by conflicts and environmental disasters.

British Heart Foundation (15%), remembering especially this 5th year of the death of Ray Masters, Luke's Dad and an inspiring father-in-law to our daughter Ruth.

Bowel Cancer (15%), inspired specially by the life and courage of Alastair MacNaughton, a good friend and Anglican priest who has been living with this disease for many years, and remembering a Singaporean friend [Chua How Chuang] who died a few years ago.

Guide Dogs (15%), giving thanks that I've always had good eyesight but there are many who are in need of these well-trained dogs (as friends).

Medical Aid for Palestinians (15%), for their splendid work in the Middle East and remembering my new-found Palestinian friends who are still experiencing the harsh reality of life under Israeli military occupation. I discovered only in 2016 that MAP was founded by an intrepid Singaporean orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Ang Swee Chai, who has worked for many years in parts of the Middle East including witnessing the aftermath of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in mid-September 1982.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

I very much appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations. Please do give generously. Lastly, I shall endeavour to keep you posted [quarterly, I hope] of my 600-mile challenge!!
