HURRAH! TODAY TUESDAY 3 JULY I HAVE SMASHED MY FUND RAISING TARGET! THANKS EVERYONE YOU'VE ALL BEEN BRILLIANT! X
THE DEED IS DONE!
Yes my lords, ladies and gentlemen, yesterday I jumped head first out of a plane 2 miles above planet earth.
That's approximately the height you are at on your holiday flight when the captain tells you it's ok to undo your seat belt and the crew start coming round with the drinks trolley. And yes it’s above the clouds. Anyone who tells you that doing a skydive is a wonderful amazing experience where you float like an angel and feel totally free and at peace with the world has clearly not done one. Think more along the lines of 'Where Eagles Dare' and the guy sitting next to the open door of the plane who gets pushed out and then falls into the sky at 120 miles per hour. Yes that's right. You fall a mile in 30 seconds. Then only another mile to go, parachute above you, but the earth so awfully far beneath. OMG is the only thing to say or even scream. But then that's the point. In the words of the Booby Birds motto:
FLY IN THE FACE OF FEAR! And in the process do something positive to help women facing the fear of breast cancer.
So THANK YOU everyone for your support and encouragement. All I’ve done is to jump out of a plane – but a whole bunch of very generous people have together raised £17,000 – that’s right, SEVENTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS! – for this life changing charity. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to make a donation to Breakthrough the lines are still open.
My two fantastic sons, James and Max, also skydived yesterday. They stepped forward after the Booby Birds had flown when given the opportunity to skydive for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. And raised hundreds more £ for this amazing charity. That's a photo of the 3 of us with our instructor'.

WHY I'M DOING THIS
3 years ago my mother Mary died of breast cancer. All her life she had been a strong, vibrant and physically tough woman. It was shocking and heart breaking to witness how rapidly this disease took hold and all too quickly ended her life.
I had always imagined that breast cancer was something we had got the better of. That there were really effective treatments and that nowadays a diagnosis was not the death sentence it might once have been.
Not so. I was shocked to discover that in Europe breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women aged 35 to 55. And that in the UK around 1000 woman die of this disease every month. That’s 1000 mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers.
My mother lived a full and busy life. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister. And a distinguished scientist and writer. It was a life well lived. But I miss her. The conversations I had always thought we would have, the time we could have spent together. And I feel sad she didn’t live to see her grandchildren flourishing, the youngest a miracle baby born just a few weeks ago.
Like the thousands of other women diagnosed with breast cancer, my mother faced her illness and death with great courage. The very least I can do to honour her and all women suffering from breast cancer is to jump out of a plane and in the process raise as much money as I can towards the vital work of researching the causes of this frightening disease and developing the treatments that will save lives.
Thank you so much for supporting me in this challenge.
