Charity
Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC) works to transform the lives of children affected by extreme poverty, hunger, illness, persecution, abuse, and neglect. Our projects focus on helping some of the most vulnerable children and young people in Thika District, Kenya. The children and families we work with come from backgrounds of abject poverty, family breakdown, abandonment, and abuse. They are often forced to live on the streets, working and begging, in conflict with other youths, local residents and the police. Some resort to crime as a means of finding food and money, and many resort to substance abuse as a means of escaping cold, hunger and pain. We believe that these children have the capacity and desire to transform their lives, and AfCiC operates several programmes designed to help them do so. AfCiC’s programmes include school drop-out prevention, child and family sponsorship, school feeding programmes, microfinance and business assistance, outreach clinics for older youth, six-month intensive rehabilitation for street children, free legal services for vulnerable children and families, and much more.

Appeal for land!
AfCiC is launching an urgent appeal for land and we need your help!
In 2010, we are committed to raising the funds to purchase our own land in Thika, Kenya. We need at least 3 acres of land for the construction of a new Interim Care Centre for the rehabilitation of street children.
Our Interim Care Centre (ICC) is a residential, educational and therapeutic space where we work intensively with former street children over a period of 6-9 months, to assist them to return to their families and education. ICC’s holistic approach combines curative and preventative measures and targets not simply the street child in isolation, but the entire family. This has proved to be a cost-effective, sustainable and successful method for combating the rapid growth of street children in Kenya’s urban centres, and since 2005 ICC has helped over 250 former street children successfully re-enter society, family, and school.
The rented buildings and land have sufficed so far, but they are rapidly becoming unfit for purpose. The buildings, including the sanitation and pipes, are in poor shape, and we have been without electricity for over a year. The current space is also insufficient for the sensitive work that we are doing, as we need separate and tailored spaces for the ICC’s many activities. For example, there is currently only one room for education, dining, and play.
Renting our Interim Care Centre is an inefficient use of our funds, which would be best spent on direct delivery of services to acutely vulnerable children and their families. For example, a month’s rent for the ICC would be enough to buy 20 complete school uniforms for those who can not afford them. Furthermore, without ownership of land we are unable to develop significant income generating activities to support the ICC from within, such as agriculture for use and sale, and renting workshop and training space.
We have two major funders who have expressed a very keen interest in funding the construction of the new ICC, and we have several volunteers who are ready to contribute their skills and manpower in areas such as architecture, construction, engineering, and project management. However, without land we can not begin to move forward. Adding urgency to this appeal, a major Thika-Nairobi highway is under construction, which is already increasing demand and cost of land.
We need £50,000 to purchase at least 3 acres of land near to Thika Town where we have built up a strong reputation, excellent local knowledge and a wide network of supporters. Please help us buy this land, so that we can assist more vulnerable children and families and improve the quality and range of our services.
