Charities
Keech Hospice Care provides specialist palliative care for adults and children diagnosed with life - limiting conditions. The charity's two hospice services aim to help patients enjoy the best quality of life possible, while providing vital support for their family and friends throughout their loved one's illness and in their bereavement.
The Willow Foundation is a national charity that provides morale-boosting special days for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds. To date the charity has organised and funded special days for young adults living with cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis, Huntingdon's, organ failure, amongst other conditions.
Every year we need to raise over £50 million to help replace cramped, outdated wards with new modern facilities, provide essential equipment and fund essential research to find treatments and cures for complex and difficult illnesses. Amazing things happen at Great Ormond Street Hospital every day. With your help we can keep the magic alive for the thousands of children and their families who need our help.
Please note Virgin Money Giving isn't responsible for the content fundraisers post on their pages, but if you see something you feel is offensive or inappropriate, please let us know and we'll look into it.
Roly Burr & Rob Hill's fundraising page
Roly and I will be 40 next year. So to mark the occasion we have set ourselves a Challenge - to walk the last degree of the globe to the North Pole, a distance of 150km over the Arctic ice cap. Given the extreme environment, there's no certainty we will reach the Pole but we will give it our best shot!
The Challenge goes beyond the expedition itself. From January to March we will be speaking in school assembly to 3,000 children to present the expedition, but also promote science, discovery, the environment and a spirit of self achievement.
And we will be raising funds in support of three very worthy charitable causes in our community: Keech Hospice, the Willow Foundation and Great Ormond Street Hospital. By way of introduction:
Keech Hospice provides emotional and practical support for adults and children diagnosed with a life-limiting condition;
Willow Foundation provides psychological and emotional support for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds through the provision of special day experiences; and
Great Ormond Street Hospital is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare, dedicated to caring for very ill children and finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses.
We will be paying for the costs of the expedition ourselves, so all funds raised will be passed to the charities though Virgin Money Giving, a not for profit organisation. VMG will also claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible.
If you'd like to follow our progress across the icecap, we will be leaving a daily update on our website at www.arcticcharitychallenge2012.co.uk, with latitude, longitude, temperature and a summary of the day's events.
We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
Rob and Roly
