Kilimanjaro Summit Climb - Lemosho Route (Railway Children)

At 5,895m, Mt. Kilimanjaro is one of the largest volcanoes ever to break through the Earth's crust. Your challenge is to reach its summit. Your trek starts in the rainforests of Lemosho Glades and heads upwards as you acclimatise on Shira Plateau. From here you will catch a glimpse of your goal Kibo, Kilimanjaro's main ice-capped peak. You continue via the beautiful Southern Flank, Barranco Wall and Barafu Route. Temperatures drop at night, allowing you to enjoy the crisp cool air under the star-studded African skies. During the days you'll rise higher; often looking down on a sea of clouds. Our groups have excellent success rates for trekkers reaching the summit, but don't underestimate the challenge ahead. Most trekkers will never have experienced a day as tough as this, with 1,000m of ascent and over 2,000m of descent. It is however victory day. Hope you like the picture.  One of us has a proud history in construction, is a completely static and solid object that never moves out of Telford, and has never been up any mountain.

Seriously the climb up Kilimanjaro is something I've never done before, but felt its for a very good cause.  The Railway Children do some excellent work, take a look at the website, and watch the video...

As Managing Director of Carillion Rail, I will be taking on this adventure along with 20 or so other senior professionals in the industry to raise money for Railway Children – a charity providing food, shelter, clothing, counselling, healthcare and education to street children across the world.  I have never undertaken anything for Charity before, and I’m not much of a climber.  I thought if the likes of Chris Moyles and other celebrities can do it I figured I’d give it a go!  

This is probably the most important journey of my life – not just because I’m about to scale the dizzying climate and height of Mount Kilimanjaro but because youngsters which my chosen charity the Railway Children Charity  will benefit from are depending on my success to help raise enough money to do it!

I write as a serial donator to charities myself and understand you probably already receive a lot of these emails during the year, but this is definitely a one-off for me!

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
