North London Hospice
North London Hospice cares for those living with a terminal illness in the Borough of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. Our support extends to family, friends and carers to ensure they have the help they need to cope with any problems arising from the illness and to rebuild their lives afterwards. We provide a whole range of services including specialist care and advise on relief of symptoms in order to improve quality of life. Much of this work takes place in the community through our team of specialist doctors and nurses who advise and support families, GPs and district nurses on the best possible palliative care to enable people to remain in their own homes. For those requiring additional support we run a day care centre and a 17-bed inpatient unit. Our services are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in order that we can always be there when needed. Likewise our bereavement service ensure families and friends continue to be supported for up to 14 months following the death of a loved one.
Chai Cancer Care
Chai Cancer Care is the Jewish community’s cancer support organisation, providing a range of services including counselling, therapies, complementary therapies, helpline, a comprehensive programme of social and physical activities, advocacy and advice as well as expert lectures. Services are available to patients, their family and friends. Based at its Centre in Hendon, services are also available in the Redbridge Jewish Community Centre, South London (Nightingale), Greater Manchester (Heathlands) and in people’s homes. Chai’s specialist professional staff is augmented by a team of trained volunteers. Chai Cancer Care is an independent organisation serving the entire Jewish community and is reliant on voluntary contributions.

Lauren & Jonathan Barr's London Marathon 2017

Lauren and Jonathan Barr

My page:

Lauren and I are both SO excited to be taking part in the Virgin London Marathon 2017. It will be our 14th Marathon each and it takes place on our 27th Wedding Anniversary weekend, our anniversary is in fact on Saturday, the day before.

Running marathons is not easy, but we both feel blessed that we are fit and strong and able to run where others can’t and that we can help others so less fortunate than us with our fund-raising and this time round, for two such worthy charities.  In addition, running has become our life-style over the last 6 years, something that we enjoy doing together and which helped me in my darkest days to take my mind off my cancer diagnosis and treatment and gave me my goal to run the 2015 New York Marathon 10 weeks post-chemotherapy which I did successfully, and since then I have run marathons in Manchester, Richmond, Berlin and Chicago.

For VLM17 we have chosen to help raise valuable funds for Chai Cancer Care and North London Hospice – both local charities very close to our heart.

Chai Cancer Care have been a rock to me during my Testicular Cancer journey and my sadness at losing my Mum to cancer – they have shown me such kindness and understanding. Their complimentary therapies really helped my rehabilitation and continue to do so.  In addition, Mum was a Chai volunteer, on Reception answering the phone and helping them organize charity in-house events – she loved feeling part of their community and helping out whenever she could.

North London Hospice cared for my Mum, Valerie in the last couple of months of her life – they were her living angels and the high quality palliative care she received was so kind and dignified right to the day she passed, surrounded by so much care and love.

Both charities rely on millions of pounds a year from donations and legacies to meet their exceedingly worthwhile high costs to fund their services, which are provided to the community free of charge. Having seen both charities at work first hand, we fully appreciate their true worth and the importance that every donation they receive is put to such good and essential use.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope you feel inspired to support us.

Jonathan and Lauren xx
