Bat Conservation Trust
The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) is the only national organisation solely devoted to the conservation of bats and their habitats in the UK. Bats are amazing animals, and an important part of our natural environment. There are 17 species of bat in the UK, all of which are protected by law because their numbers have decreased so dramatically. BCT is working towards a world where bats and people live in harmony, to ensure they are around for future generations to enjoy. Your support will make a big difference to what we are able to achieve.

On 23 April I ran the 2017 London Marathon to raise money for the Kate Barlow Award. With the support of Kate Barlow’s parents, Bat Conservation Trust has set up a new fund in memory of a dear friend and colleague.

Dr Kate Barlow was a leading figure in wildlife conservation, a passionate advocate for bats and bat conservation worldwide and a lover of adventure. From her work on pipistrelle bats in the UK during her PhD (that led to the discovery of two cryptic species present in the UK), to her time as a Base Commander with the British Antarctic Survey studying penguins (Kate was the first woman to have ever over-wintered at the base) she was a real explorer and believed conservation and exploration went hand in hand.

I first met Kate at a talk she gave on her research into the cryptic pipistrelles to Merseyside and West Lancs Bat Group and was struck by her knowledge and passion for the subject. This was in the early days of my interest in bats and the event captured and engaged my imagination, and it is up there with the inspirational events that shaped my involvement with bat conservation. More recently we had the pleasure of working quite closely with Kate on the pilot of the Nathusius Pipistrelle survey, and the training weekend was another great event where Kate’s warmth and kindness was again on show, she was a pleasure to spend time with.

Kate unexpectedly and sadly passed away late in 2015 at just 44 years of age. She crammed a lot into her short life and she was truly inspirational to many people. With the support of her parents, a new fund has been set up in her memory. The Kate Barlow Award will help give budding conservationists the opportunity to follow in Kate's footsteps by making a real contribution to bat conservation as part of their post graduate studies. All money raised from this appeal will go to Kate Barlow award. You can find out more about the fund

Running a full marathon is  a big deal for me. Just 3 years ago I struggled to run 1/2 a mile. Now I've lost 4.5 stone and have run a number of 10k's and 4 half marathons. Knowing how I've  felt at the end of these races, I know that doubling the distance will be a substantial challenge, especially with the training needed. Please help to motivate me by donating, and don't forget to Gift Aid .

Thank you so much for your donations and support.
