Barts and The London Charity
Barts and The London Charity is an independent registered Charity which supports the three main hospitals within Barts and The London NHS Trust, including St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The Royal London and the London Chest Hospitals as well as the schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. Charitable giving by patients, local communities and businesses has always played and will continue to play a vital role in our hospitals. Their support helps provide state of the art facilities and equipment; supports cutting-edge research and innovations in treatments and ensures the best possible standards for our patients, staff and local communities. The hospitals still rely on the generosity of donors and volunteering from people in our diverse local communities and from those further afield. The Charity’s vital work cannot continue without the help of people like you.

The motor neurone disease research team at Barts and The London School of Medicine are currently seeking funding to complete research into the role of muscle stem cells as a potential therapy for motor neurone disease (MND). MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, breathing, swallowing and general movement of the body. From the onset of symptoms, life expectancy can range from 6 months to 5 years. MND affects over 5000 people in the UK each year.

There are currently no effective treatments for MND, therefore there is a real clinical need to identify new therapies that can be developed to treat MND patients. Recent research undertaken by the team has identified muscle stem cells as a promising channel through which a therapy could be developed. This proposal moves away from the traditional research focus on the motor neurones themselves and looks at the function of muscle stem cells that are contributing to the degeneration of muscles in MND patients. The research team is highly experienced and supported by the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Medical Research Council, but relies heavily on charitable donations to drive forward research for this severely under-funded condition.

Project cost: £220,000

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor the team and donations will be quickly processed and passed directly to Barts and The London Charity.

We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Please note that Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and that gift aid is claimed on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
