CLIC Sargent
CLIC Sargent helps children and young people with cancer and their families with the trauma of diagnosis, the often long journey through treatment and continues to support them afterwards. Every day 10 families are told that their child has cancer. Diagnosis often comes as a shock. Treatment usually starts straightaway and can last up to three years. CLIC Sargent is there with clinical, practical and emotional support, every step of the way.

“If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or Fight Like Hell."

I’m planning a small fund-raising personal challenge for the end of May 2010 in order to raise money for CLIC Sargent - an amazing charity which cares for children and young people with cancer and leukemia.

The Charity:

Please, take 5 minutes to watch the attached CLIC Sargent film on Youtube – it will quite clearly explain the role of the charity and why I have chosen them.

Everybody knows of somebody who has struggled the battle against cancer.

CLIC Sargent is less well known than the bigger cancer charities and deserves greater recognition. Perhaps because I have worked with kids for just under 2 years now I am inclined to fund-raise for a childrens charity.

The Challenge:

I plan to cycle from my university town of St. Andrews to Elie – a part of my own childhood - and back again.

And I won’t be taking the main roads – I’m using the cliff-hugging coastal path which winds in-and-out the East Neuk of Fife’s coastline. So what makes this a challenge?

  • The path is not made for cyclists. “Mountain bikes are essential... Be prepared to swim with the bike” (cycle-route.com);
  • The path is, at times, little wider than the width of the bike’s tyres;
  • It is 50 miles of solid off-road biking, consisting of mud, beaches, flooded expanses, boulders and ruts;
  • "The route turned into a nightmare - deep sandy beaches, huge rocks and narrow stairs cut into the cliffs up and down... My batteries ran low, my patience ran very low! I was so happy when I finally made it to St Andrews..."  (An encouraging testimony by a local cyclist...!)
  • I’m doing it alone - no medical, navigational or back-up support;
  • I once tried to cycle the trail from Elie, only a matter of miles, and ended up face down in the mud. Twice. Can I beat my record?

Please see the below pictures, borrowed from Flickr, for a look at the terrain of the route:
