Charity
We're a Branch of Samaritans like any other, except that we don't have a building and we don't have a telephone! Instead, we go to events throughout Britain and provide a 24 hour Samaritan service. The events are predominantly out-door music festivals like Glastonbury or Reading, but also various biker, dance, surf, multicultural, lesbian/gay, homeless events, and others. If you're at an event and feel you need to talk something through with a non-judgmental person, in complete confidence, please come by and see us. If it's an outdoor event we will often be standing outside a large tent with a big green SAMARITANS banner. We are a registered charity based in the UK and Republic of Ireland that provides confidential emotional support to any person who is suicidal or despairing; and increases public awareness of issues around suicide and depression.
Please note Virgin Money Giving isn't responsible for the content fundraisers post on their pages, but if you see something you feel is offensive or inappropriate, please let us know and we'll look into it.
Charlotte Brittain's 10k fundraising page
Hi,
I completed (notice i didnt say ran!) the race in 1hr 33 minuets and 48 seconds!! And all this despite not actually owning a pair of trainers until a month before the race, only ever running for the bus, and not walking more than 2 miles without want of a coffee and a sit down!! Needless to say, I had to run for the bus before my race, and resist every urge to not stop at Starbucks halfway round!
Despite the pain in my hips, thighs and feet(!!!) I'm glad I ran the Bupa 10k Race for Festival Samaritans, because if any charity is worthy of my blood, sweat and tears it's them!
If you can help support them by sponsoring me, that would be fantasic and your help is much appreicated.
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to the charity.
Samaritans is a confidential emotional support service. The service is available 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
Whatever you’ve done: whatever life’s done to you. You can call Samaritans, no names, no pressure, no judgement. They are there for you, anytime.
So why are Samaritans at a festival? At any event where there are thousands of people having a great time, there are inevitably some who are not. Sometimes people can arrive hoping to forget about their problems, but the sight of so many happy people can make them feel even worse. Others can arrive feeling relatively OK, but something happens during the event which leaves them feeling low.
This is where Festival Samaritans fit in, by providing a 24 hour, non-judgemental, face to face listening service throughout the event. People can discuss anything that’s getting them down, no matter how serious or how trivial and the conversation is completely confidential. Whether people feel suicidal or not they are given the opportunity to talk through whatever is on their mind with a non-judgemental volunteer who is trained to listen.
This is such an important charity and to carry on this work Festival Samaritans need to raise £25,000 for the coming year. I’m running the BUPA 10,000 to help raise the much needed funds. Please help me do this by sponsoring me here.
Thanks, Charlotte
