Great Ormond Street Hospital Childrens Charity
We need to raise about £100 million every year to help rebuild and refurbish Great Ormond Street Hospital, buy vital equipment, fund pioneering research and support important patient, family and staff support projects, to ensure every child at Great Ormond Street Hospital receives the world-class care they deserve.
Anthony Nolan
Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer and blood disorders. Every day, we match incredible individuals willing to donate their blood stem cells or bone marrow to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants. It costs £60 to recruit, tissue type and maintain just one potential donor to our register. Your donations will help fund our lifesaving work. Please visit www.anthonynolan.org for more information or email events@anthonynolan.org if you'd like to get more involved.
Niemann-Pick Disease Group UK
Niemann-Pick UK (NPUK) is a charitable organisation dedicated to making a positive difference to the lives of those affected by Niemann-Pick diseases. We raise much needed awareness, provide practical and emotional support, advice and information and facilitate research into potential therapies. We are a small charity with less than five hundred members, the work we do is funded entirely through fundraising activities and successful grant applications. Our strength, therefore, comes from the dedication of our much valued families, members, benefactors and volunteers who work with tremendous effort and loyalty in support of the charity.

Hello, thanks for visiting our team page.

We are planning to walk some 200 miles across Northern England following in the footsteps of Wainwright’s classic Coast to Coast Walk.

We are using this team challenge to raise funds for three charities.

Our first charity is Niemann-Pick Disease Group (UK)

Calum Burdon, nephew of Mark Raven, was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C just before his second birthday.  Niemann-Pick Type C is an extremely rare genetic condition which causes disability and premature death in the early years.  Sadly, on Boxing Day 2011, Calum passed away aged just seven years old. Calum was a beautiful little boy much loved by all his family and friends who have worked tirelessly to support the Niemann-Pick Disease Group and will continue to do so in his memory.   Much needed fundraising is welcomed by the Niemann-Pick Disease Group to help the important research into this terminal condition and support the other children living with this rare genetic disorder.

Howard Johnson is a close friend of Mark and Calum’s family and has been involved since Calum was diagnosed in supporting them and fundraising for Calum and the Niemann-Pick Disease Group.

To find out more about the Niemann-Pick Type C condition please take time to watch the video of Calum's story on this page.

Our second charity is Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity

The care Great Ormond Street provides for all their patients is recognised world-wide but they rely on the fundraising they receive to be able to provide this outstanding care on an ongoing basis.

Kevin Standrin’s granddaughter Jessica has been a patient of Great Ormond Street since her birth in April 2007. Her care at Great Ormond Street Hospital has been without doubt first-class.  She was in hospital for the first four months of her life after being born with a condition called Congenital Hyperinsulinism. Her condition, although life-threatening, is under control with medication and is improving as she grows.  Jessica is a very happy child and will soon be starting mainstream school.

Our third charity is the Anthony Nolan Trust

This well-known Trust helps in saving the lives of people with blood cancer. It is sad to realise but the fact is that every 20 minutes another person is diagnosed with this life threatening disease.

In 2007 Greg Johnson’s wife Karen was unexpectedly taken ill with a bone barrow disorder. Fortunately this is currently being controlled with chemotherapy and for now we are pleased to say she can lead a normal life. However, in some cases this disorder causes leukaemia. Although there is no cure The Anthony Nolan Trust does great work in both bone marrow transplants and blood stem cell matches. Their continued research and commitment helps save the lives of people of all ages.

We would very much appreciate your help and support to raise as much money as possible for these very worthwhile causes. The cost of the walk and accommodation (and all beer consumed!) is being met by the team members so all of money donated with go to the charities.

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind generosity

Kind regards,

The Coast 2 Coast 2012 Team

Howard Johnson, Greg Johnson, Mark Raven, and Kevin Standrin
