The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national organisation that gives young people between the ages of 8-18 who have suffered from cancer and leukaemia the opportunity to take part in the new and fantastic experience of sailing. The majority of our young people are off treatment and in recovery from cancer and leukaemia. These young people are recruited by our contact (usually a nurse or social worker) at the hospital or group we work with, as they are more involved with the young people at the hospitals and so aware of who would benefit the most from the trip. The young people can continue to sail with the Trust up until their 18th birthday or remission date. Often the young people that sail with us have spent long periods of time in hospital and can be suffering from low self-esteem on top of missing out on large chunks of their childhood. Studies into the psychological effects of cancer in children highlight how important positive personal relationships with others are in facilitating coping with cancer. They also state how difficult it is for the children (especially teens) to establish independence and a sense of control over their lives and maintain a sense of personal worth. The emphasis of our trips is on teamwork and fun, with sailing as the perfect catalyst. Sailing offers a new experience in a small and intimate environment, which gives the young people the space to assert themselves without the chance of getting lost in the group. These independent studies into the psychological effects of cancer in children and the values of sail training for young people highlight the long term positive impact the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust trips can have on the challenges that children with cancer and leukaemia face. “Jay returned full of confidence, chat, and knowledge of sailing. Jay had ‘life’ back in his eyes. He enjoyed the whole experience"
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and one man dies of it every hour in the UK. The Prostate Cancer Charity is the UK's leading charity working with people affected by prostate cancer. We are fighting prostate cancer on every front - by funding and encouraging research, providing support and information for diagnosed men, and their friends and family, and we campaign to improve the lives of men with prostate cancer. We provide the most comprehensive range of services of all the prostate cancer charities and offer the only UK-wide prostate cancer Helpline supported by specialist nurses who provide free and confidential information and support to anyone affected by prostate cancer. Your support could help save men's lives.

College Chambers are once again organising their bi-ennial charity ball. This will be the fifth ball held and we hope to build upon the successes of the previous years to provide a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all. This year's event will be held at St Mary's Stadium, Southampton Football Club on 14th May 2011.
Any money raised is through the auctions and raffle on the night as we do not make a profit from the ticket sales.
The proceeds from this event will be divided between the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust (charity no. 1096491) and the Prostate Cancer Charity (charity no. 1005541). We are hoping you may be able to help in making our event a success and raise a considerable amount for these charities.
The Prostate Cancer Charity was founded in 1996 in response to the urgent need to invest more in prostate cancer research and to raise public and political awareness of a long-neglected disease. They were established with the broad remit of improving the care and welfare of those affected by prostate cancer. The Prostate Cancer Charity is now the UK's leading voluntary organisation working with people affected by prostate cancer.
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust became a registered charity in late 2002, and was officially launched by Ellen MacArthur on 2nd January 2003. It takes young people aged between 8-24 sailing to help them regain their confidence, on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness. They now work with every young persons primary cancer care unit in the UK. These primary care units deal with around 95% of young people being treated for cancer in the UK.
Our charity ball is generally attended by barristers, solicitors, judges and local business people as well as their friends and family. This has always been a very enjoyable evening as well as raising considerable amounts for worthwhile causes.
Events during the evening include an auction, silent auction and raffle as well as table prizes and a casino.
If you do not anticipate being able to the attend the event in person...we'll miss you!...but you can still help make it a success by donating here!
Thank-you!
