Us In A Bus
What does it make you feel when you’ve met a friend for a chat . . . Listened to? Close? Happy? What does it make you feel when you share a joke with a lady in the supermarket . . . Warm?Connected? Part of something? Imagine what it must feel like if you find communication challenging, if you have no words and the world (and especially the people in it) are confusing. What must it feel like to not be understood or misunderstood? Lonely . . . scary . . . frustrating ? Us in a Bus creates opportunities for those with profound learning disabilities to communicate and connect with others that the majority of us take for granted. Our team visit 200 people in Surrey and the surrounding areas every week. Most have no words and the majority have other disabilities or conditions that make day to day life difficult and communication challenging. We aim to learn a way of making a connection with individuals to ease loneliness, build self-confidence and make a positive meaningful connection that lasts long after our visit is over. We also aim to build connections between people with learning disabilities so they can connect with each other.

My page:

The team at Concept Financial Planning have chosen two local charities to support, raising money for them through various events and general donations throughout the year. We feel that charities are incredibly worthwhile and are pleased to be associated with them. The charities we are supporting are Us In A Bus and The Lucy Rayner Foundation.

The Lucy Rayner Foundation is a charity that are trying to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression in young adults. The signs and symptoms of depression are not always identified and can be missed, which could result in young adults feeling lost or hopeless, not knowing the reasons why. The foundation was set up in 2012 by Lucy Rayner’s family after her death, as they saw a need to raise the issue of mental health in teens and young adults.

Us In A Bus is a charity providing a unique service for people with profound learning disabilities, many of them also have physical or sensory disabilities and complex needs. They visit over 200 people in the Surrey and Greater London area, visiting these people in their homes each week; developing a connection with each individual person, sometimes building connections with others in a small group.

Each person they visit is unique and will have their own specific needs, Us In A Bus works with these individuals in the way most suited to them, building relationships and trust to help them be able to fully express themselves, “The therapeutic impact of this can be seen in people’s increased confidence and willingness to engage with others”.
