Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity
The PKD Charity is the only charity in the UK dedicated to the concerns of people affected by Polycystic Kidney Disease - PKD - a range of inherited, incurable renal conditions. Our vision is improved health outcomes and a better quality of life for people with PKD, and, ultimately, a cure. In PKD, fluid-filled cysts develop on the kidneys, resulting in declining kidney function and often renal failure. There are two primary forms of PKD: ADPKD (autosomal dominant PKD) is termed the world’s most common, inherited, life-threatening condition. It is estimated that 60-70,000 people in the UK have ADPKD. Half of all those with ADPKD will have kidney failure requiring dialysis and/or transplantation by age 60, and most patients will experience a range of extra-renal problems such as hypertension, strokes, infections, enlarged livers, kidney stones, acute and chronic pain. The rare ARPKD (autosomal recessive PKD) occurs in children and results in enlarged kidneys with or without cysts. In ARPKD, sadly, 30% to 50% of infants die at birth or shortly after, primarily as the result of under-developed lungs. Those that do survive will need kidney and/or liver transplants from an early age. It is estimated that between 2-3,000 children and adults have ARPKD but many more will carry the mutated gene recessively. Our aims are: To provide information, advice and support to those affected by Polycystic Kidney Disease with regular patient days, a website, newsletters and leaflets To fund research into determining the causes of PKD, discovering treatments and a cure To raise awareness of PKD, providing information about PKD to patients, the public, the medical community and the media We are run by volunteers with the help of a part-time fundraiser.

jarochallenge

There is nothing like a challenge and as employees of Coutts Manchester we have decided, as a team, to take on the worlds highest free standing mountain to help us raise money for some excellent local charities.

Whilst we are sure we will find this an exhilarating but  exhausting experience of a lifetime, our main motivation is to raise as much as we possibly can for these charities, so a brief word on each:

OnSide Northwest

OnSide is a relatively new charity with the aim of building a network of top quality youth centres across the North West. This will give young people in some of the poorest communities in our region an affordable place to go in their leisure time and will also encourage them to get involved in activities that otherwise they may not have the opportunity to do!

The vision is based upon the Bolton Lads & Girls Club which is used by over 2500 boys and girls each week. Glyn recently had the opportunity to visit this centre and meet some of the people making the vision a reality. It is a truly inspirational place making an immeasurable difference to these young people’s lives.

Beechwood

Beechwood is a haven of tranquillity where patients, their carers and their families are empowered to live positively with cancer. Beechwood was opened in 1990 and is a North West day centre offering psychological support following a cancer diagnosis or treatment. Within their welcoming surroundings they offer a range of free support, including 1 to 1 talk time, complementary therapies and group sessions to help patients, family members and carers cope with all the problems they may have to face.

Tony took time out recently to visit Beechwood and has seen first hand how they are helping more people live positively with cancer.

When You Wish Upon A Star

When You Wish Upon A Star is a small charity whose primary aim is to grant the Wishes of children suffering from life threatening illnesses and since they started in 1990, they have granted over 14,500 Wishes for some very brave and courageous children and their families. All children have Wishes, but for these children and their families that Wish is much more precious.  We really want to support Wish to help make more children's one dream come true.

PKD Charity

James has a link to PKD Charity for personal family reasons. It is the only charity in the UK dedicated to the concerns of people affected by Polycystic Kidney Disease – PKD – a range of inherited, incurable renal conditions.

Please support us in our challenge in any way you can. Thank you
