Charities

Havens Hospices
Havens Hospices provides respite breaks, symptom control and end-of-life care for adults and children living with serious illnesses or conditions. It aims to make their journey - and that of the family - as comfortable as possible, creating special memories along the way. The love and care provided by the Care Team in the homely surroundings at Fair Havens Hospice and Little Havens Children's Hospice is free of charge. This could not continue without kind donations as it costs £5.1 million each year to keep the hospices open.
Willow Foundation
The Willow Foundation is a national charity that provides morale-boosting special days for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds. To date the charity has organised and funded special days for young adults living with cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis, Huntingdon's, organ failure, amongst other conditions.

Hi all,

The challenge is over and the cyclists completed 641 miles in 8 days, arriving in Southend-on-Sea on Saturday 8th October at around 3.30. It was a very emotional ending combining a great sense of pride in everyone and relief that everyone had got home safe and relatively sound; except for a few scrapes, grazes and aching muscles and backs. I think everyone had a tear in their eyes.

Please continue to donate, we would like to raise as much as possible.

Please follow our blog on:http://southend2southendcycle.blogspot.com/

Our cyclist were: Nick & Alison Robins, Neil Robins, Dan Garside, Andy Metcalf, Garry Nelson, Chris Nelson, Tracy Reschwamm, Clive Shiret and Mike Whistler

The Support Crew were: Penny Shiret and Linda Nelson

Team Mascot: Fergus - the jack russell

ARCHIVE

You probably think we're all mad but on October 1st this year, 10 of us (Nick & Alison Robins, Neil Robins, Dan Garside, Andy Metcalf, Garry Nelson, Chris Nelson, Tracy Reschwamm, Clive Shiret and Mike Whistler) will be setting off to cycle approx 650 miles from Southend in Scotland (Argyll on the Mull of Kintyre to be precise) back to our home town of sunny Southend-on-Sea (in Essex!). You could call it the Soothend to Sarfend bike ride.

Please follow our blog on:http://southend2southendcycle.blogspot.com/

Providing valuable back up support and possibly even sharing some of the long cycling miles will be Linda Nelson and Penny Shiret. Couldn't do this without you ladies!!

The 650 miles are being attempted in just 8 days which means, on average , 80 miles a day! Blimey - a very tall order you might think (and so do we if we're honest) but it's for 2 fantastic causes.

The first Charity is a local Charity called Havens Hospices (which incorporates Fair Havens and Little Havens). It is a Charity which provides end-of-life care for both adults and children. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and no patient is charged for the care they receive.

The second Charity is The Willow Foundation, founded by Arsenal legend Bob Wilson. It is a national Charity which provides special days out for seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds and gives much needed time out from the stresses of living with a life-threatening condition.

All monies pledged will be split 50:50 between the 2 Charities.

Thank you for visiting our page. Please give generously to 2 fantastic causes. Through this Virgin Money Giving website, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Kind words from Bob Wilson OBE who will be joining us for part of the final day's riding

"Cycling from Southend(Scotland)  to Southend(Essex) in 8 days is a big feat of endurance - and all for 2 amazing causes.  On behalf of the Willow Foundation, we are delighted to have been chosen as the nominated national charity alongside Havens Hospices that do so much great work in the Southend and South East Essex area.  My admiration goes to all those riders who will have put their bodies through hours of training in order to undertake the 80 mile a day cycle challenge.  Having recently completed my own epic cycle challenge visiting all the Premier League grounds I know how much hard work and dedication is involved.  Sudacrem and Lanacane powder will become their best friends! So if you are able, please show your support and generosity by helping the team reach their target. Your kind donations will doubtless speed the team on their journey and make a difference to those who are experiencing life with serious illness.  I would like to wish the whole team on the Southend to Southend Charity Challenge every success and safe cycling over the 650 mile route." (Bob Wilson OBE)

The First Day

We are staying at MDGC on the first night and they have kindly donated free transport for the team to get us from Glasgow airport to Campbeltown in addition to taking us down to Southend for the start of the ride.

Stacy and Janette have been great from the start and could not have been more helpful in ensuring that we start the ride ‘raring to go'
