Mencap
Mencap is the voice of learning disability. Everything Mencap does is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability, and their families and carers. We work with people with a learning disability to change laws and services, challenge prejudice and directly support thousands of people to live their lives as they choose. There isn't room to list everything we do here, but there's loads of information on our website http://www.mencap.org.uk
Heart Of England Community Foundation
We are dedicated to strengthening communities, creating opportunities and tackling issues of disadvantage and social exclusion for adults and children throughout Coventry and Warwickshire. Believing in 'local giving for local need', the foundation acts as a vital link between those looking to source funding (quite often for the first time) and businesses/individual donors wanting to put something back into the communities they work or live in. A small amount of money can make a big impact to communites and our awards can range in size from as little as £80 or as much as £12,000. Established in 1995 as one of 58 community foundations across the UK, we have made awards of in excess of £8.5 million to date, to more than 2,400 groups and projects, equating to a little over £10 for every man, woman and child in the area. Heart of England Community Foundation is quality accredited and is trusted by government agencies to deliver grants programmes including Grassrooots Grants and European Social Fund. If you would like to do something amazing for your local community - It starts here!

There is no question that de Savary should not have been allowed to build the hotel and complex at Land’s End. It should have been preserved as a piece of land marking the southern tip of England.  That sentiment was far from my thoughts though when I rode into Land’s End at 4.15 pm on Monday 17th September 2012. I had not anticipated how testing the coast road from Penzance to Land’s End would be. It took me 2 ½ hours to cover 12 miles. Anyway I celebrated my arrival at the final destination with a Cornish pastie and a cup of tea – thank you de Savary for ruining Land’s End.

Having stayed the night in the Land’s End Hotel the next day I returned to Penzance and took the ‘A’ road. It only took me 50 minutes with virtually no climbing!

This second leg of my trip really started from Much Wenlock. It took me four days and was punishing riding the 350 miles taking me through the hills of the Forest of Dean, the Quantocks, Exmoor, the edge of Dartmoor and finally Cornwall. There were some wonderful moments – the 2 ½ mile descent through Cheddar Gorge, the exhilarating song of a mistlethrush as I got to the top of a particular eyeblowing climb, the smell of the sea at Bude, the magnificence of Tintern Abbey and of course the arrival at Land’s End. There were also some tough moments mostly uphill but none more so than the final 2 ½ hour stint to Land’s End.

So what are my reflections of the trip? First it must be the beauty of the countryside. With my route being on minor roads and country lanes it has been a brilliant way to experience the rich variety and ever changing face of the British countryside, and the major rivers which run through it – the Spey and the Tay in Scotland, the Wye and the Severn in England.

Secondly during a trip such as this life simplifies itself – my daily routine was up at 6.00 am on the road by 6.30 a.m. (bike all day till 5.00- 5.30 pm) find somewhere to sleep, have a meal, bed and sleep then do exactly the same the next day.

Thirdly taking the minor roads means having to map read accurately ( a wrong turning can be hugely costly in loss of energy and morale), this involves concentrating thus taking it away from the pain of biking up hills and spending 10 hours a day in the saddle.

It all started out as some sort of personal therapy “it had to be done”. But what was very much a personal challenge became more than that with the amazing support you all gave me when I decided to raise some money for charity at the same time.   Never in my wildest dreams did I envisage being able to raise any way near the target of £10,000. Thank you so much to each of you for your contribution and your support.

The only trouble with these things is once you’ve done it you need to do it again!

Watch this space………

Kind regards
