29th October 2015

1 day before our daughter’s 6th birthday, 3 weeks after my wife's 40th birthday and 3 weeks before my 40th birthday, our lives changed forever!

I was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a terminal cancer related to exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is all around us, yet this is an under-funded, little known cancer, with an average life expectancy of just 12-18 months.

We don't know where I got Meso from, we were in shock but we were faced with tough choices and 3 weeks later, to give me the best chance, I had my left lung removed. I was home to spend Christmas with the family whilst I recuperated and then started gruelling chemo in January 2016.

Thankfully, so far the treatment plan has been successful. I have now just outlived the first milestone of 18months and there is no current sign of the disease - I feel very blessed. Yet, we are told one day it will return and when it does, we want there to be a cure! I need to see our kids Joshua (9) & Erin (7) grow up, get married and have children of their own. I want to spend quality time with my wife Alison and our family & friends. So I need to help find a cure for mesothelioma.

15 months on from finishing chemo, I’ll be taking on a very hilly 100 mile bike ride. Considering 12 months ago, I could barely walk down the drive, and 18 months ago, I needed a zimmer frame in hospital, I feel very fortunate to attempt it.  I wanted a challenge, I want to inspire others that no matter what your health is, with the correct training, support & belief, anything is possible.

You have all helped and supported us throughout this difficult time and without it, we wouldn't be in the position we are today. If you could kindly help us now and donate to these two wonderful charities we would be very grateful: Mesothelioma UK - funding research & specialist Meso nurses across the UK and the British Lung Foundation - supporting research to find a cure for mesothelioma!

During the ride, I will be supported by best mate Stephen Colley & brother-in-law Simon Ingyon. They and their wives have been amazing support throughout the last 18 months to Ali & I and I am honoured that they are supporting me to ensure I get across that finish line!

Please help us "cycle for a cure" and donate towards these two amazing charities.
