Davy's Run: Oct 16 - Oct 17

John Owens

My page:

Hi everyone and welcome to my page.

I’ve been very lucky following my recovery from a second stroke 5 years ago and refuse to look back and regress to where I was both mentally and physically. Following the recent tragic death of my best friend, David Davis, and trying to come to terms with moving forward, my next mountain to climb is no other than The London Marathon in 2017.
I have decided to dedicate this run to David’s memory and raising awareness of mental health issues, as I’ve been there myself and at my lowest point could not see any way out. But once fit enough, I took to training and at the end of an exceptional Military Career managed to refocus and find a new lease of life.
This focus led to overwhelming success with the Scottish Half Marathon and Great Scottish Run, challenges which I set myself last year, also raising awareness of PTSD and associated illness while raising vital funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland. It gave me thought for my new venture next year.
Although a keen runner, running 26 miles is a daunting thought, especially with a hole in my heart and the brain dysfunction I live with. The training I have set for this mammoth task will be long and at times feeling like, ‘what am I doing?!’ But with the help of family, friends and my charity – Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, that’s all the motivation I need to succeed and enjoy such a great occasion.
John Owens – Stroke Survivor.

Following the recent sudden death of my best friend David Davis and moving forward, my next monumentus event is 'DavysRun' a double marathon event, combining The London Marathon and Stirling Scottish Marathon. My recovery from a second stroke 5 years ago has seen me do various challenges but nothing as personal as this one.

I recall all the fun times we've had throughout our military career, as he was not only a close friend of the family but a true gentleman who left behind a massive hole in our lives.

My adapted '22PushUpChallenge' in 2016 led to overwhelming success with the Scottish Half Marathon, Great Scottish Run and Culloden 10 mile Run, also raising awareness of PTSD and associated illness while raising vital funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

I dedicate these Marathon's to the memory of Davie, who tragically took his own life. My aim is to continue to support CHSS and 'The Hidden Wounds' programme through Help For Heroes, who deal with people that often see suicide as the only way out. We can prevent this as the funds that i raise will not only help the wellbeing of someone, but hopefully prevent another family suffering!

Although i'm a keen runner, running 26 miles - twice in a 4 week period, is a daunting thought, especially with an ongoing illness. The training I have set for this mammoth task will be long and tyring, but with the help of my family, friends and your kind donations - that’s all the motivation I need to succeed and continue to support others. Let's all join together and play your part and follow me on my journey to London and Stirling - ComeHomeToRun.

UPDATE: now the marathon's are complete, I've decided to leave this page open for more of your kind donations through to October 17, exactly one year following Davy's death. This will see me run:

2 Marathons, 6 Half Marathons, 12 10k races, and The River Ayr Way Ultra Marathon Relay team.

Thank you for making this possible.
