St Christopher's Hospice
St Christopher’s Hospice serves a diverse population of 1.5 million in the London boroughs of Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark reaching some of England’s most deprived areas. It costs over £14 million each year to deliver all our services. Only about one third of our income comes from the NHS. We must raise more than £9 million to continue to deliver our patient and family services free of charge and to run our extensive programmes of practice innovation, research and education. Throughout its history, St Christopher’s has been a pioneer in end of life care and has raised standards of care internationally through evaluated pilot projects, research and education. Today we are one of the largest providers of end of life care training and support in the world.

Some of you visiting this page will have known my great-aunt Hilda Schroder, an imitable actress who died at the age of 92 earlier this year. A strong-willed woman all her life, she was adamant that she would not die in hospital or a care home, and that she wanted to stay living in her own home as long as possible. Along with her family and carers, St Christopher's Hospice was able to help her stay in her home, and then looked after her in the hospice for the last 8 days of her life.

From first having contact with staff from the hospice on home visits, and then spending time with Hilda in there, I was amazed at their dedication and caring. They made the last few days of Hilda's life as comfortable and painfree as possible.

And so I want to give something back to St Christopher's, and will be running the 2 Castles 10k on Sunday 10 June, from Warwick Castle to Kenilworth Castle. Many of you will know my aversion to running, and the fact that the last race I took part in was the Coventry Fun Run in 1998 tells you all you need to know about my running prowess! I'm not sure I'm going to make it, but if anything will keep me motivated in my training and during the race, raising well-needed funds for St Christopher's will.

And if you're in the locality that weekend, feel free to come and cheer me on! I'll be the one with the red face and the St Christopher's vest with my name on...

St Christopher's Hospice
The founding of St Christopher's Hospice in South London in 1967 began the start of the modern hospice movement and it has been a pioneer in the field of palliative medicine, which is now established worldwide. It costs over £14 million to deliver all of the hospice's services, with only about a third of this coming from the NHS. This means that St Christopher's needs to raise more than £9 million from supporters and the local community.

Here's the blurb...
