“I never imagined that at 17 I would be paralysed from a motorcycle accident. In a moment my whole life was turned upside down. I loved riding my bike, I also played rugby, cricket and football and had a girlfriend (or two!)
On a night I was supposed to be at rugby training, I decided to give it a miss and go out for a ride with my friends instead. We were on a road we had never been on before when the accident happened. I came off my bike and hit an iron bridge, broke my back and ended up paralysed.
I don’t remember how it happened or how fast I was going. I lost about 8 months of memory and was in a coma for about 6 weeks in Intensive Care. For several weeks, the doctors told my friends and family not to expect me to still be there in the morning.
I spent a long year in a specialist spinal cord injury centre but, due to infections and medical complications, was not able to do much of the important rehabilitation. Instead, I just lay on my back and watched TV. When I eventually got home, I went on the drink for a year – banned from driving because I had an epileptic fit on the night of my accident, it seemed like a good idea at the time to drown my sorrows in alcohol.
About four years later I woke up and thought “what am I doing with my life?” I signed up for night school, learnt some new skills, and since then I’ve had a series of great jobs. It is so important not togive up and to have hope for the future and this is exactly what the charity Spinal Research is giving me.
The Fight Back appeal, which I am fronting with the help of all our famous supporters, will allow people who are passionate about motorcycling to give something back.
