Charity

Andrew Finch Education Trust
The charity (www.afetuk.org) is small and very cost effective. It aims to break the cycle of poverty of the rural poor in Ecuador via the support of education, health and welfare of children in Ecuador. Very little money raised in the UK is spent on administration (less than 5%). Reports are sent out twice a year to supporters. It is known that rural children tend to leave school as soon as possible to go to work on the streets of the nearest city or on the land earning a pittance. They drop out of school because their parents can't afford to keep them there or because English and Computer Studies are required at secondary school. City children get these subjects at the primary level and are way ahead, rural children struggle to keep up. AFET sets up computer teaching centres in schools or communities (1-3 at a time), where computer skills are taught, and if English speaking volunteers are present teach English as well. Adult courses are also run if there is a demand. A lending library is available to encourage reading for pleasure, and this has been an unexpected and resounding success. Individual children can be sponsored (currently £210 per year), which is conditional on their staying at school, and a health fund as well as a building fund also exist. The former enables parents to seek a doctor's advice, buy medicines or treatment prescribed, which is an enormous relief to these poverty stricken familes. The building fund tries to improve hygeine by supporting the building of water closets and washing facilities in the family home (often just a mud floored shack), to decrease the prevalence of diaorrhea and vomiting bugs, and hepatitis. Do look at our web site and that of the Ecuadorian charity we work through (www.voluntariosdeoccidente.org). Donations are well used and always welcome, reports can be sent if you wish. Voluntarios are always looking for volunteers of almost any age. Mature volunteers are very welcome.

We Made It!

It was a very tough day due to the weather - gale force winds on all the tops coupled with horizontal rain for the first 3 hours! We even walked a mile further than when I did the walk last year to avoid sinking in the bogs.

Hannah was a star - I'm sure that not many 9 year olds have completed this walk and she even ran to meet her Dad at the end and jogged back to the car! It took us 12hrs 15 mins in the end but Hannah would have completed in under 12 hours if she hadn't had to wait for me! A big thankyou to Naiomi for spending her 40th Birthday keeping us company - a day she won't forget!

Every single penny we raise goes straight to the children in Ecuador - the money we raised last year has made a big difference to many children. See our charity page for more details or visit www.afetuk.org.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to our charity. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
