Sue Ryder
Sue Ryder is a charity providing health and social care to people living with long-term, palliative and end of life needs. We deliver our services in peoples homes, in the community and through our hospices and care centres across the UK. We support people, their families and friends affected by conditions including cancer, stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, dementia, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease and motor neurone disease. Each year we provide 4 million hours of care, make 1.4 million home visits to people in need and deliver 100,000 days of long-term residential care. we are one of the largest providers of specialist palliative and end of life care in the UK. Our work goes beyond the UK. Sue Ryder also supports the delivery of specialised health and social care across Europe and in Southern Africa.

About the challenge

I am raising money for the Sue Ryder Nettlebed Hospice by cycling 420 km/260 miles over 5 days through Death Valley in November 2013. It is not just cycling through a valley,it is one of the hottest places on Earth and also includes some major climbs through the steep mountain ranges that border it:

  • Daylight Pass (1,315 metres / 4,317 feet)
  • Emigrant Pass (1,624 metres / 5,328 feet)
  • Towne Pass (1,511 metres / 4,956 feet)
  • Mountain Springs Summit (1,673 metres / 5,490 feet)

In addition to the challenge, I have cycled the 'Ride for Ryder' on May 12 (60 miles in 4 hours 51 minutes), and am also attempting the Birmingham to Oxford (7 July, 77 miles) and the Wiggle Stratford Sportive (27 July, 60 miles) during the course of 2013.

I hope you can support Sue Ryder's Nettlebed Hospice by leaving a donation. It doesn't matter how much you donate, all money will help the hospice continue supporting people with life limiting illnesses.

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations which I aim to raise before the end of August 2013

About the charity

1 in 13 people are affected by an incurable illness at any given time. That means 4.8 million people across the UK right now are coping with the effects of incurable illness. While we all hope it won’t touch us personally, the sad reality is that it one day it could, and making provision for this growing need is tough. Whatever the illness, be it cancer, Parkinson’s or even brain injury ... our challenge remains the same. Not just to provide specialist medical care to ease pain and discomfort, but to also offer patients and their families’ real emotional support. This level of care comes at a price, a price that is becoming increasingly difficult to afford.

By donating to my page it’s your chance to help Sue Ryder's Nettlebed Hospice continue providing incredible care for those with incurable illness.

  • £10 provides one hour of individual care from a trained carer.
  • £25 means someone who has suffered a stroke can receive two home visits.
  • £50 covers the cost of a day care or therapy session for somebody with dementia.
  • £300 covers the daily cost of running a hospice bed
  • £570 covers the cost of a highly trained nurse for a week providing care and support for patients and their families.
  • £1000 pays for a clinical nurse specialist for a week working in the community offering individual and tailored support to patients in their own homes.
