2010 Virgin London Marathon

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

Two years ago Sharon took Alison under her very fit wing and persuaded her to start running. Alison couldn't run to the shop without stopping for a rest. "Don't talk to me, I can't run AND speak" became her catchphrase but soon Alison's fitness gradually improved and Sharon persuaded her to do a 5k race "Just to have something to work towards". Alison vowed NEVER to run for longer than an hour but Sharon suggested they run a 10k race "It won't take an hour!". Afterwards, in a moment of weakness (or drunkeness) Sharon & Alison filled in the forms for the Bristol Half Marathon and finished the race thinking it would be impossible to run for twice that distance. "Let's put our names down for the London Marathon - we'll never get a place anyway" said Sharon but ...........

As mothers, we feel it is very important to show our children that keeping fit is a way of life. The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event on the planet so we are raising money for Barnardo's in order to help underprivileged children in the UK.

So if you see us training on those cold, wet, windy, winter nights give us a wave (but don't splash us with puddles) and please show us your support by donating as much as you can to this very important charity. And thank you to our husbands and children for all their kind support and understanding when, yet again, we say "Gotta Run!"

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to the Horse & Jockey on Friday 4th December to our Glam Originals party. We raised a very impressive £450 on the night so thanks for all your support.

To anyone that is keeping up to date with our training via this page thought we'd just let you know that the snow has not stopped our training. We have managed 3 snow runs across the fields - not quite as far as we'd wanted to go but better than nothing. Just a couple of falls but nice soft landings and no injuries.

In February we went to London to train with Daley Thomson (if you're under 25 he won 2 Olympic gold medals in the Decathlon!) and other Marathon runners who are raising money for Barnardo's. We had a great time (our legs didn't though!) and are starting to get very excited about doing the REAL THING!!

Thanks to Claire for donating the commission from her Glam party in February.

It's March and we've just about reached the peak of our training now and have completed 3 20 mile runs with varying degrees of success. We're feeling quietly confident that we'll manage the whole 26.3 miles.

Kate and Dave have been enormously generous and hosted a delicious dinner party for 10 people in their beautiful house. £220 was raised and the 10 lucky guests had a fantastic evening.

A big thanks to Peter and Elizabeth for holding a drinks party to raise money for Barnardo's. £100 was raised.

Well, we've finished our journey and completed the London Marathon in 4:38:28. We managed to run together from start to finish and were extremely glad to see the finish line. A big thank you to everyone for supporting and sponsoring us - especially our families.
