Charity
The Body Shop Foundation is a charitable company, limited by guarantee, who operate closely with The Body Shop International. We give money to innovative, global projects working for social and environmental change. Since 1989, we've funded over 2,500 projects around the world - donating just over £19 million. We look for groups with enthusiam, energy and drive who work at grassroots level. These projects - however dynamic - sometimes get overlooked. Sometimes - because of the unfamilar or pioneering nature of their work - conventional funding is hard for them to recieve. To us though, being different and daring deserves to be recognised. We look for progressive charities and groups which fall within our remit and invite them to apply for funds. We are so proud of the groups we support and the difference they make around the world. They are the reason we continue to love the work we do and the way we do it.
Please note Virgin Money Giving isn't responsible for the content fundraisers post on their pages, but if you see something you feel is offensive or inappropriate, please let us know and we'll look into it.

The Lamandau River Wildlife Reserve is one of the few sites in Indonesia that has received both rehabilitated orangutans and those trans-located from areas where they are threatened such oil palm plantations. The total orangutan population in the reserve is estimated at around 700 individuals. We are safeguarding these endangered orangutans through the provision of veterinary care, monitoring and habitat protection.
During the past year we have received a record number of requests to rescue wild orangutans. We have been able to respond to the growing number of requests from the Indonesian wildlife department to trans-locate wild orangutans from areas outside of the reserve, which are at serious risk of injury or death, to inside the reserve. We are committed to individual orangutans and their survival as a species. Whilst some of the trans-located orangutans are adult and healthy and so once released into the reserve they will be able to fend for themselves some of the rescued orangutans require ongoing monitoring and veterinary care. Their rescue is a commitment for years. This recent increase in rescues, especially in the last 6 months of this year, has put extra demand on our resources and staff.
Deforestation, primarily for the conversion to oil palm plantations, is leading to increasing numbers of orangutans losing their habitat. Other threats such as slash and burn farming, illegal logging and forest fires are also significant. It is therefore essential that we continue our work to safeguard this important rainforest reserve that provides sanctuary to hundreds of orangutans and many other endangered species such as gibbons, clouded leopards and sun bears. Once the forest is gone, bio-carbon released and wildlife wiped out, it is too late. Working with the Indonesian Forestry Department we offer protection to the wildlife reserve through a network of manned guard posts and forest patrols.
Our programme costs include staff wages (all our employees are Indonesian and most are from the local area), transport costs, fuel, patrol supplies, staff equipment and veterinary supplies. These are our core costs but they are the core of what we do. By supporting this programme your trekkers, and their sponsors, can be assured they are helping to keep forests standing and orangutans in the wild.
Once widespread throughout the forests of Asia, orangutans are now confined to just two islands, Sumatra and Borneo. There are two genetically distinct species: the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). Sumatran orangutans have lighter hair and a longer beard than their Bornean relatives, and Sumatran males have narrower cheek pads. Both species are highly endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.
The orangutan is one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, sharing 96.4% of our DNA. "Orang Hutan" literally translates as "Person of the Forest".
Orangutans are unique in many respects. They are the only Great Ape in Southeast Asia, and indeed the only Great Ape found outside Africa. They are the only "red" ape, and the only strictly arboreal ape, meaning that they spend their lives in the forest canopy, even building nests in the trees in which to sleep. The other Great Apes (chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas) do climb and build nests in the trees, but tend to spend their lives on the ground. Orangutans also differ from the other Great Apes in that they do not live in family groups. The largest family unit is a female and two offspring, and males and females usually meet up only to breed. This semi-solitary lifestyle is thought to have evolved due to the unpredictability of available food, but may also have been influenced by human pressures. Orangutans primarily eat fruit, and spend up to 60% of their time foraging and eating in order to get enough energy. Orangutans are highly intelligent animals. They use tools in the wild and have excellent memories to make mental maps of their forest home in order to find fruit trees throughout the seasons.
