Heidi Rayward

Tommy's goal is to reduce the incidence of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth which cause so much suffering to more than a quarter of all parents across the UK. Tommy's believes that disseminating information can help to minimise the risks inherent in pregnancy whilst medical research will increase our understanding of the fundamental causes and hence lead to identifying those most at risk and treating them.

Heidi's Race to 40 (for James)

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

So here I am, seizing the bull by the horns and committing myself to this mammoth task of not only signing up to run the marathon in 2017 but to also raise £4416 for Tommy's.

My story starts at the beginning of this year (2016). Whilst I was pregnant I took up running in the hope of counteracting high blood pressure. It wasn't an easy task having not actually worn running trainers, let alone run, for many MANY years but I had a purpose and so it was I started. After successfully reaching my first goal of running a mile continuously without keeling over I decided to set my next target... running 5km. Rather sadly the 2016 London Marathon resulted in the death of an Army captain who was raising funds for Help 4 Heroes. This tragedy spurred me on to do my 5k run in honour of Cpt Seath and his uncompleted miles.

It was at this point I thought, "I've done a mile, I've done a 5k so naturally next is a 10k run". This spurred me on to commit myself to doing each of the distances 1mile, 5k, 10k, half marathon and Marathon in time for my 40th birthday next year (2017). So pregnant and determined I continued to run, increase distance and improve.

Sadly April 2016 took a turn in events and on April 4th 2016 my beautiful baby boy, James, arrived at 23 + 3 wks.  He didn't survive delivery and so I am left with empty arms and a broken heart that no parent should ever have to experience.

The Virgin London Marathon 2017 will fall a matter of weeks after James' first birthday and so I have decided to combine my pre 40th Marathon run with fundraising for a charity that can help research ways that will hopefully prevent other parents from suffering the loss of their baby.

James will always be with me every day in my heart but I want to honour and celebrate his existence next year and feel this is the best way for me to do exactly that.

So I'd just like to say, any £'s you can spare to sponsor me through my blood, sweat and tears (there will be plenty of the latter) I would be ever so grateful for. I won't be fast, that's a fact, but I will complete. That I can promise xx

Thank you for your support xx

Update: I have now started an instagram page heidiraceto40 if you want to track my journey to the marathon. Running cheers always welcome!

Update: In September I will be running in memory of James for Tommy's at The Great North Run. Thank you all so much for your continued support x

Update: The London Marathon was a great success and as promised I completed. Thank you everyone for your support. Next challenge is Great North Run in September.
