The Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national organisation that gives young people between the ages of 8-18 who have suffered from cancer and leukaemia the opportunity to take part in the new and fantastic experience of sailing. The majority of our young people are off treatment and in recovery from cancer and leukaemia. These young people are recruited by our contact (usually a nurse or social worker) at the hospital or group we work with, as they are more involved with the young people at the hospitals and so aware of who would benefit the most from the trip. The young people can continue to sail with the Trust up until their 18th birthday or remission date. Often the young people that sail with us have spent long periods of time in hospital and can be suffering from low self-esteem on top of missing out on large chunks of their childhood. Studies into the psychological effects of cancer in children highlight how important positive personal relationships with others are in facilitating coping with cancer. They also state how difficult it is for the children (especially teens) to establish independence and a sense of control over their lives and maintain a sense of personal worth. The emphasis of our trips is on teamwork and fun, with sailing as the perfect catalyst. Sailing offers a new experience in a small and intimate environment, which gives the young people the space to assert themselves without the chance of getting lost in the group. These independent studies into the psychological effects of cancer in children and the values of sail training for young people highlight the long term positive impact the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust trips can have on the challenges that children with cancer and leukaemia face. “Jay returned full of confidence, chat, and knowledge of sailing. Jay had ‘life’ back in his eyes. He enjoyed the whole experience"
Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (uk)
The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund was set up by Nelson Mandela to offer care protection and support to the most vulnerable children in South Africa. Believing that every child has the right to a childhood free of abuse NMCF works tirelessly to protect children by supporting their families and communities. NMCF in the UK fundraises for this vital work and is extremely grateful to the motivated and generous individuals and companies who make such an important contribution to the future of children in South Africa.

Helen Jones - Clipper RTW Yacht Race

Helen Jones

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/HelenJonesClipper

I am setting sail on 1st September 2013, to circumnavigate the globe on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The 40,000 mile journey is an 11 month marathon. Fewer people have raced a yacht around the world than have climbed Mount Everest. My objective is to raise £1 for every mile that I am sailing and split the money equally between two very special charities.

Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust:

A British organisation that gives young people between the ages of 8-24 who are in recovery from cancer the opportunity to take part in the new and fantastic experience of sailing.  The majority of young people who sail for the first time with the trust, have finished treatment and are in the process of putting their lives back together.

Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust:

The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital will be built with the support of donors from across the globe. The 200-bed academic and paediatric referral facility will serve children across Southern Africa. The hospital will honour Mr Mandela’s life-long commitment to children. No child will be turned away due to inability to pay.

The Race:     https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/

In case you want to learn a little more, the Clipper website has further details about the route, the boats & the crew. My skipper is Rich Gould (boat CV 25) & you’ll be able to follow our journey around the world online, or on the iPhone App. We believe we are the South African boat, but the sponsor has not yet been announced…

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
