Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group - Survival for children with cancer and leukaemia has improved from 10% in 1970 to around 75%. The clinical trials and laboratory research conducted by members of Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) has been a major factor in this. The CCLG is the only charity dedicated to supporting the work of those looking after children and teenagers with these life-threatening illnesses. The Group is committed to research and development in the treatment of cancer in these age groups. But although childhood cancer treatment is, rightly regarded as a great success, it should not be forgotten that still today three out of ten children diagnosed with cancer will not survive their disease. The ultimate aim of CCLG is to maximise cure while minimising the early and late side effects of treatment. Information for families of children with cancer is an important issue and to help support both the children and their families we produce a wide range of award winning publications which are available free of charge. Caring for children and curing their cancer remains our goal.

Emily's Big Walk Newcastle

Emily's Big Walk in Newcastle will take place at Alnwick Castle courtesy of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. Join us with Bill Bryson for a magical Wizards & Witches family walk! All funds raised will be split 50:50 between CCLG and the Great North Children's Hospital with the support of the NECCR.

Hi, thanks for visiting this page.

I am a Doctor working in the Child and Adolescent Cancer Unit at the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. Currently I am doing a PhD research project to identify why very young children with a type of Brain Tumour called Medulloblastoma do so much worse than older children, and how we might develop new treatments to improve their chances of survival.

I am also a survivor of childhood cancer: at the age of 13 I was successfully treated for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Thanks to CCLG, my chances of surviving cancer then were better than they'd ever been; now they would be better still.

But there's still so much to do. For many types of childhood cancer, current best treatment strategies do not deliver good enough rates of survival, or have too great a cost in terms of long-term side effects. Developing new treatments is a complex and difficult challenge, but one that must be overcome if all children diagnosed with cancer are to have the quality of survival that I am fortunate to enjoy.
