Charity
YMCA London South West (Formerly Kingston & Wimbledon YMCA) is committed to putting Christian principles into action through programmes that build a healthy body, mind and spirit for all. We are passionate in our desire to respond to the needs of the local community and in growing people. Operating from five main sites, our diverse work comprises supporting residents in our hostels to build a future, running youth projects and offering a vibrant children’s programme, where we cater for some of the most deprived children in the area. Our restaurants are open to the public and are especially popular with senior citizens for whom we also provide a variety of activities, and our affordable gyms aim to cater for all needs.

Ian George's Kingston Sleep Easy page
Hi, thanks for visiting my charity fundraising page.
On Saturday 30th January 2010 I will be taking part in the Sleep Easy event in central Kingston. The event is organised by Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness (KCAH) and Kingston & Wimbledon YMCA.
The event is a sponsored sleep-out to help raise funds to fight homelessness in the borough of Kingston. The cause is a very good one. I'm a local councillor for Alexandra ward in the Royal borough of Kingston. As Conservative housing spokesman I have come across many instances where people have become homeless through no fault of their own. It comes as a surprise to many people that the Council offers very little help to homeless people who are not classed as a priority. They are often just sent to charities like the KCAH and YMCA who help as much as they can. This can sometimes just mean that they provide a sleeping bag due to lack of available beds in shelters, although they always try to do more than that.
I am often as cynical as anyone about this type of event. I certainly don't believe that by sleeping out for one night (from 6pm to 6am) I will have the same experience as someone who is truly homeless. However, it could give me just a small idea of the problems that the homeless have to put up with and will of course raise much needed money. As the advertising says: 'Sleep rough so others don't have to'.
I am of course looking for sponsors for the sleep-out. If you would be willing to sponsor me, please do so on this page. If you would like to do it the old fashioned way, please contact me through my website (www.iangeorge.org), sending your contact details and aamount you would be willing to sponsor me. If any business would be willing to sponsor me, I will give advertising space on the box (hopefully more than one box!) that I sleep in.
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
