Ian Hind

The Daisy Garland
A family-run national children’s charity providing active support for children with drug-resistant epilepsy and their parents/carers. The charity was set up in memory of our daughter Daisy who tragically died at 6 years of age from SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy patients). We provide NHS hospitals with ketogenic dietitians - a medically recognised and accepted way of treating drug resistant epilepsy. This diet is not widely available on the NHS due to lack of funding. We also provide grants for night-time breathing monitors to children with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Ian Hind's 26 miles for The Daisy Garland

I am running the Robin Hood marathon on 28th of September and will be raising money for the amazing work of The Daisy Garland charity, in supporting children with epilepsy and their parents/carers.

This will be my second full marathon, the last one 7 years, and what started out as a personal challenge for a 40 year old to see if he can do it again and better, has become an opportunity to raise sponsorship and awareness for the work of Daisy Garland.

Inspired by two amazing parents at my daughter's school, who have experienced the benefits of The Daisy Garland's work and are in the process of completing two of their own incredible personal challenges (I'll post their links at the bottom of this please please take a moment to visit and read), I wanted to support the charity they are they working so hard to support.

The Daisy Garland fund a growing number of specialist dieticians across the UK to work with families to use Ketogenic Diets, which has seen incredible improvements in the lives of children with difficult to manage and drug-resistant epilepsy. They also provide equipment and monitors to families at home to be able to catch seizures as early as possible.

According to the National Society for Epilepsy, epilepsy affects at least 300,000 people in the UK - 60,000 of these people are children under the age of 16. Epilepsy affects 1 in every 100 children.

It is the most common serious neurological condition in the world and can affect anyone at any time in their life - it has no respect for age, sex, race or social class.
Seizures tend to develop in childhood or by late adolescence, but the likelihood of
developing epilepsy rises again after the age of 65.

One in twenty people will have a single seizure sometime in their life.

So please considering sponsoring me to run the a Robin Hood Marathon, and help fund a Ketogenic Dietician in the UK or provide much need equipment/resources to families living with epilepsy.
