Charities

CLIC Sargent
CLIC Sargent helps children and young people with cancer and their families with the trauma of diagnosis, the often long journey through treatment and continues to support them afterwards. Every day 10 families are told that their child has cancer. Diagnosis often comes as a shock. Treatment usually starts straightaway and can last up to three years. CLIC Sargent is there with clinical, practical and emotional support, every step of the way.
Raft - Restoration Of Appearance And Function Trust
RAFT is an independent charity working to prevent and improve the treatment of major traumas such as burns, wounds and cancers of the skin through advances in medical research and in reconstructive plastic surgery. Please refer to our website for further information. www.raft.ac.uk

Great North Run

Fundraiser:
Ian Shakespeare

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/IanShakespeare

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Being originally from the North East it has long been my ambition to compete in the Great North Run, one of the great mass sporting events in the UK.  My third application was successful and I have been lucky enough to gain an entry to the 2010 event.

I have long cherished an ambition to raise some monies for worthwhile charities whilst running, this has given me the opportunity to do this. Although always a keen sportsman it was football, cricket and badminton rather than athletics that was my forte.  Encouraged by my eldest son I started running two years ago at the age of 58.  I am now 60 with a dodgy knee, toes and a dodgy ankle to boot!

My goal is to raise as much as I can for R.A.F.T. and CLIC.   My wife is a nurse and from my long career in the fire and rescue services we have both seen many people disfigured by fire.  This appears to me to be a very worthwhile cause to push my ageing body to the limit!  RAFT is of course one of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters own charities.

My sisters’ eldest daughter Lakshmi was diagnosed with cancer in 1996 and the Malcolm Sargent Cancer fund for children (now CLIC) were amazing in their support for the whole family. Unfortunately we could not help Lakshmi but we can assist other families in the same position.

Any support however much you can give will be split 50/50 between the two charities.

Update, The training is going well (fingers crossed) and I am feeling a touch of nervous anticpation!!

Final update, Feeling a lot better following my virus/man flu episode although I missed my last big run and am therefore revising my hoped for time.  Will be content to finish in 24 hrs!
