Paul Stewart's IronSpine Challenge 2013

Fundraiser:

2.4 mile swim + 112 mile cycle + 26.2 mile walk + 1 cliff-face climb

Four years ago Paul fell a terrifying 200ft down a mountain at La Plagne in the French Alps, initially threatening and ultimately changing his life forever. In the fall Paul sustained a spinal cord injury which left him partially paralysed.

‘‘I remember waking up in hospital and being told that I was paralysed from the waist down and would never walk again.’’
Paul

Paul can walk with the aid of sticks. He has limited ability from the waist down and remains totally paralysed below the knees with no sensation or movement in his calves and feet.

The goal: Raise vital funds for research into spinal cord repair

The IronSpine Challenge takes Paul through 15 days of gruelling physical tasks, testing his endurance and spirit, and ultimately taking him back to conquer the mountain that broke him. Doctors would have said then that this challenge was simply impossible, every mile Paul walks or cycles will be the equivalent of an able-bodied person covering four times that distance.

Paul’s challenge begins at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he endured six months of intense rehabilitation, and continues through the heart of London. Paul will then return to France to climb the 200ft cliff he was thrown from by an avalanche, breaking his back.

‘‘After many months of gruelling rehabilitation, I can now walk with the aid of a walking stick, but it could have been so different for me. That is why I support Spinal Research and Wings for Life. They provide hope for the 1000 people in the UK and Ireland who are paralysed every year as a result of a spinal cord injury.’’ Paul

Paul will be visiting spinal injury centres along the way, raising awareness and funds as he walks through local communities.
