Help For Heroes
Help for Heroes (H4H) was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry after a profoundly moving visit to Selly Oak Hospital in the summer of 2007. Bryn and Emma met some extraordinarily brave young people who had been badly wounded and they just wanted to do something to help. "It’s about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It’s about Ben, it’s about Steven and Andy and Mark, it’s about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes."
Cavendish Cancer Care
Cavendish Cancer Care offer a very special package of personal support and complementary care to all of those who have to cope with cancer their children and carers . One in three people will be directly affected by cancer in their lifetime cancer is an illness that affects the whole family on a daily basis, everyone is "living with it". Many patients find it difficult to cope physically, practically and psychologically. Patients and their families often require support to reach a point where they can accept their diagnosis and live with cancer. They need to be able to take control of their situation and to improve the quality of their life. When people are at their most vulnerable, and do not know where to turn, Cavendish Cancer Care offers an open door and support. We also offer specialist care to children whose parents or carers are diagnosed with cancer. Cavendish Cancer Care offers people a range of psychological support and complementary therapies all of which are provided on a self-referral basis free of charge by qualified experienced staff. Our care is focussed on the person and not on the cancer. We give people time to talk through their concerns and agree on a personal package of care. This is greatly appreciated by their users but it is expensive to provide. A recent patient, a GP, who had herself worked in cancer care, said that, with the help she received at Cavendish Cancer Care she felt “whole again”. We see it as an essential that they offer clients a first appointment within a maximum of five working days and a distressed client can be seen much faster than this. Despite the fact that the need for supportive and integrated care like this is written into National Cancer Care Plans, NHS funding is very limited. the funding we receive from the NHS only keeps our doors open for 15 days a year. We need your help to ensure that local people who find it difficult to cope with cancer will always find the door of The Cavendish Centre “wide open.”
