GIST Support Uk
GIST Support UK works to help patients and families affected by GIST (gastro-intestinal stromal tumours). GIST is a rare cancer and is one of a group of cancers known as sarcomas. The Charity runs an email list and meetings to provide the opportunity to talk to others, and to hear about and discuss aspects of treatment with health professionals. There are fewer than 1,000 cases of GIST reported annually in the UK, usually affecting people over the age of 60. There is however an even rarer group of patients with Paediatric, Adolescent, Wild-type or Syndromic GIST, and our newly formed PAWS-GIST Clinical Focus Group has been set up by a group of doctors, patients & carers in the UK, who are focussing on improving treatment and finding a cure for PAWS-GIST patients. More information about the Charity can be found by visiting our website at

Janes Dean's fundraising page

Victoria Janes, Graham Dean

My page:

A while ago Graham (Dean) and Tori (Janes Bassett) were at work (having lunch/tea/eating cake) and decided to cycle the Way of the roses; a cycle route across the breadth of the UK, covering 170 miles from Morecambe Lancashire to Bridlington North Yorkshire. After discussion of how to get back home, they realised both being from North Yorkshire that they were too tight to pay for a train ticket back to Lancaster so opted to cycle back also.

It then dawned on them this 340 mile route was also quite hilly. 2959m of climbing EACH WAY. Both ways that's more climbing than Kilimanjaro. Graham then changed the gears on Tori's bike and they both agreed that would probably be adequate preparation. Especially when combined with Tori's out of date energy gels.

If completed (that's quite a big if at this stage) Graham and Tori expect to have bragging rights for at least a decade. They'd also like to raise some money for a charity that's very close to their hearts; PAWS-GIST. GIST stands for Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumour and is a rare form of cancer. PAWS-GIST (which stands for Paediatric Adolescent and Wild-type) GIST is a rarer subset of GIST cancer found in younger people. Tori's husband Richard was diagnosed with PAWS-GIST back in 2008 and has been taking a drug to control the cancer that has now spread to his liver. The drug has some pretty horrible side-effects, and we don't know how long it will work for. The main aim of PAWS-GIST is to fund research into this rare cancer. The charity GIST Support UK and the PAWS-GIST initiative are run entirely by volunteers. To find out more about the charity visit the PAWS-GIST clinic website here, and GIST Support UK's website here.

There undoubtedly will be tears and tantrums along the route, nobody knows if they’ll still be friends at the end (were they at the start?). But most importantly they’ll raise funds to support furthering treatment into this rare cancer. So if you can spare a few quid (or more) it would be much appreciated. Or as Graham says ‘Give Give Give’.

If anyone wants to join the ride for a segment to help promote fundraising, cheer them on during the ride, or if you’d like to sponsor one of the awards below, please get in touch.
