Disability Challengers
Playing, having fun and making friends is serious stuff and every child has the right to access challenging and exciting play opportunities. However, many children can't or don't feel able to access mainstream play and leisure opportunities - these are children with a range of emotional, behavioural, physical, social, learning and sensory impairments. Not only does this hamper their development but it also places enormous strains on the whole family. The results are shown in evidence of considerable increased likelihood of parental separation and poverty. Disability Challengers is a registered children’s charity, established in 1979, dedicated to providing exciting and challenging play and leisure opportunities to disabled children and young people. We support any child or young person with any impairment through our Play (age 3 - 13), Youth (age 13 - 18) and Young Adult schemes (18-25). We do this through our play and youth centres in Guilford and Farnham, Surrey, and through our range of community based projects across the county. A significant benefit of our service is providing families with short-breaks during high pressure times e.g. at the weekend or during the school holidays, enabling them to do ‘ordinary’ activities such as working or spending time with their other children. Our Vision... Our research shows that the way Disability Challengers works and the voluntary / statutory partnerships we have formed are highly effective but rare. While our service focuses on providing disabled children with essential play opportunities the benefits of our work are far reaching and have positive effects on the wider economy and society. We are currently conducting research into our ‘model’ in order to provide evidence that this model should be developed as a ‘national strategy’ by the voluntary and statutory sector. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice
Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, based in Farnham, Surrey, is the only adult hospice serving West Surrey and North East Hampshire. We care for seriously ill people and their families both at the Hospice and out in our local community. Our philosophy is about living, not dying, and understanding that the modern use of the word ‘hospice’ is about a specialist system of care across many professions in the community.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page.

A special thanks for all those that have sponsored me and to those that supported me on this challenge. Its not too late to donate !

So how did it go?

I feel I ran and danced my way around this event on a tsunami of good will. I smiled and socialised, and was amazed to find that I was leading a strong international field at mile 130. I stayed out in front until mile 220 when stumbling from lack of sleep and a sore right knee, I got lost in the waterways around Oxford, and was then caught by 2 runners. I was rejuvenated by a mountain of texts and positive messages at 240 miles and finished really strongly and in good shape, but still adrift of the first 2 runners. So 3rd place it was, which exceeds all expectations but leaves me wondering about next time ................

This month I am running 250 miles without stopping!!  To help me to keep going on this endurance feat on the Thames Ring Race, I would like your help to raise money for my 2 favourite local charities:

Disability Challengers do amazing things for local children and young people with disabilities, and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, the only adult hospice in this part of Hampshire and Surrey.

We have personal connections with both and never cease to be impressed with the love and professionalism that we see.
