Jim Raises Cash for Children With Leukaemia

Update 5th August 2010
Well, my offline fundraising is complete now and, thanks to the generosity of people at work (Durham Constabulary) and at my wife's healing group in Washington, I raised a total of £351.66. Added to the current online total (for which thanks mainly to the members of my homebrew forum) that makes a total of £1,313,66.
I've raised the target to just over that amount, in case any late donations come in, but I'm not really expecting any more, as people have been very generous already.
I'd like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has donated, whatever the amount.
The picture above is me just after finishing, with my wife Carol and grandaughter Niamh (Liam was her cousin).
Best wishes,
Jim
Running for Charity - posted April 2010
Yes, Jim is taking his beer gut to the streets and running for charity!
NOTE: This race is on the 18th July 2010 NOT the 11th as the Virgin Giving listing indicates.
At my advanced age, it took some motivation to do this, and that motivation is my grandson Liam, who was diagnosed with Leukemia about 18 months ago. After a year of painful treatment he went into remission, only to fall ill again in February this year (2010). He's now faced with going through it all again.

Liam before he was diagnosed with leukaemia
Hopefully the money I raise will help him and other children who contract this awful disease.
Please give as generously as you can (think about me puffing my way round the streets of Sunderland).
Best Wishes,
Jim
Update 18th July 2010
Well, the deed is done, I ran the 10K today in 1hr 12m 38s - slightly under my target, and I'm very happy to have got round in one piece.
You can see highlights of the race on Channel 5 next Saturday 24th July at 10am - you might even see me being interviewed by Ali Paton (aka Siren) at the finish line, if it makes the cut.
Thanks to everyone who has donated; if you haven't yet but would like to, this page will be open until the 11th October 2010.
Jim
Update 16th July 2010
Only 2 days to go to the run now, and I'm better prepared than I ever thought I would be. I did 4.5 miles for my last long training run, taking about 51 minutes; the last couple of weeks have been shorter maintenance/recovery runs, so I should do the 6.2 miles of the 10k in my target time of 1hr 15m, even allowing for the inevitable bottlenecks that occurs in these races.
Wish me luck!
Jim
Update 23rd June 2010
Liam passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday morning 21st June, with his family around him. He was 16 years old.
I will be running this race in his memory, and to raise money to give other children like him a better chance.
Jim
Update 14th June 2010
This is a difficult update to write. Two weeks ago we were told that Liam’s chemotherapy wasn’t working and that the doctors can do no more for him; the cancer is just too aggressive. A bone marrow transplant can’t be done either, because the level of cancer cells is too high. It’s now just a matter of time. As you can imagine, this was devastating news for the whole family; nevertheless, I’m still determined to do this run and raise as much money as possible for Children with Leukaemia.
Thanks partly to coverage in the local press, we’ve had some very generous donations, and I’d like to personally thank everyone who’s given to this worthy cause. I’ve also been fundraising at work, and so far people have pledged over £150 and still counting. This amount is in addition to the total shown on this page, so we are very close to the target of £1000.
My training’s going fine and I’m on target to run (slowly) the whole 10k.
Thanks,
Jim
Update 28th May 2010
Thanks once again for the lastest donations; I’m amazed by peoples' generosity!
My training is going fine, despite a few aches and pains along the way, though I still don’t seem to be going far (my longest run is still 2.3 miles). However, I trust the training plan and my strength and endurance is building up gradually; I can see my mile times improving (at between 10 and 11 minutes, still slow by a real runner’s standards, though ;o) ).
I now have the fund-raising pack (and the multicoloured running vest!) from Children with Leukaemia, so will be starting to raise money offline soon. Eventually the amount raised that way will be added to the total to take it closer to the target amount.
Cheers,
Jim
Update for 26th April 2010
It’s still going up! Thanks everyone.
Liam is continuing his chemotherapy – luckily he’s mentally a very strong person.
I’ve just started week 6 of my training schedule, which is about 1/3 of the way through. It’s going well; I’m up to 20 minutes of continuous running now, though at my speed that’s just under 2 miles. It’ll still get me to the end the 10k in about an hour and a quarter if I can keep it up for long enough though, and I’d be quite happy with that!
Incidentally, the run is on the 18th July 2010, not the 11th as shown on the left - I've emailed Virgin Giving to try and get it put right.
Update 16th April 2010:
Thanks for the continuing donations – over £300 collected so far! Amazing!
I’m going to fundraise offline as well. Children with Leukaemia are sending me a runner’s pack which will have sponsorship forms to enable me to ambush my work colleagues. I’ll add the amount I raise that way to the page (once I figure out how to do it!).
A bit of good news at last; Liam’s brother and sister have been tested for suitability as bone marrow donors and BOTH are suitable. Liam still has 6 weeks of chemo to go through, but this has given us all some hope.
As for me, I’ve had a bit of a head cold this week and missed a training run, but I was back out tonight and felt OK. Still a bit snotty, though.
Update 7th April 2010:
Many thanks for the very generous donations so far; let's keep it going!
Liam is due to start his second course of chemo following a break to recover from the first lot, so our thoughts are with him.
As for me, I'm into my 3rd week of a beginner's training plan from www.taketothestreets.org and can run over a mile without stopping now; considering my first run was mostly a walk things are progressing well.
I'm not about to break any speed records, though!
All the best,
Jim
