John's Wainwright challenge

John’s Fundraising Page

Thank you for looking at my fundraising page.

In June, 1999, at the age of 57, I had heart valve replacement surgery in the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary. After a quick return to fitness, I set myself a target to climb the 214 Wainwright mountains in the Lake District within 5 years of my operation. Having accomplished this in June, 2004, I gave myself a further challenge, this being to climb them for a second time by different routes where possible, before my 65th birthday in February, 2008. I reached this objective in October, 2007.

My passion for climbing the mountains never diminished and I continued scaling the heights. At the start of this year, I had 4 Wainwrights to climb in order to complete the 214 for the third time. I made successful ascents of three of these earlier in April and on Saturday, April 29th, completed the third round. I did this last climb to the summit of Tarn Crag, which is above Easedale Tarn near Grasmere, with members of the family, and the occasion was marked by a small celebration.

I am raising money for 3 charities :-

“The British Heart Foundation" which funds research and education into fighting heart and circulatory disease.

“Take Heart”……a charity which helps to fund the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds, and

“The Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association”.

More information about the work of these charities can be found by clicking on the icons alongside.

The reason for choosing the first two is centred on my gratitude for the amazing advancement in operations and treatments for heart patients and for my own care at the Heart Centre nearly eighteen years ago. I chose the third charity to mark my immense admiration for the work which the search and rescue teams do in the Lake District, an area of the country which I treasure.

It would be very much appreciated if you decide to support me in this fundraising venture. The total monies which I raise will be divided equally between the three listed charities.

Many thanks
