Through our work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities, and with veterans, we have seen time and time again that unresolved mental health problems lie at the heart of some of our greatest social challenges.

Getting our HeadsTogether for mental health
Help us reach our goal as we run the Boston Marathon on 17 April and the Virgin Money London Marathon on 23 April.
Two inspiring UK and American veterans Karl Hinett and Ivan Castro, Major US Army (Ret.) are getting their #HeadsTogether and their running shoes on to support the mental well-being of veterans. They are running the 2017 Boston and Virgin Money London Marathons (that’s two marathons in a week!), side by side, in support of The Royal Foundation’s Heads Together campaign which aims to change the conversation on mental health and end the shame and stigma which surrounds it.
Karl was just 19 when he was involved in an attack on his 26 ton Warrior Tank while serving in Iraq in 2005, resulting in 37% burns to his hands, legs, arms and face. Ivan sustained life-threatening injuries and was blinded in both eyes during combat in Iraq in 2006.
Between them Ivan and Karl have spent over 100 hours on the operating table, over 12 months confined to a hospital bed and endured over 100 surgeries.
They both discovered a huge part of their recovery – both physical and mental – has been found in running and combined they have taken part in over 200 marathon and ultra-marathon races around the globe, including the North Pole, Antarctica and the Amazon.
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor them and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
Funds raised in the UK through Virgin Money Giving will support Contact, one of Heads Together’s eight UK Partner Charities. Contact is a collaboration of leading UK military charities, support organisations, the NHS, the Ministry of Defence, UK Psychological Trauma Society and top academics working together to make the most effective mental health support easily accessible to Service personnel, Ex-Service personnel and their families.
Funds raised in the US by the American Friends of The Royal Foundation will support veterans in America, including the mental health well-being programmes run by Homebase, a partnership of the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital.
