Charities
Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Over half of all cancer research in the UK is carried out by our scientists. We have discovered new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer that together have saved millions of lives across the world. We have been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival rates double in the last thirty years. But one in three of us will still get cancer at some point in our lives. Our groundbreaking work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people will survive.
Bowel Cancer UK is a national charity with offices in England and Scotland. The charity aims to save lives by raising awareness of bowel cancer, campaigning for best treatment and care and providing practical support and advice. More than 38,600 men and women are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK every year and more than 16,250 people die from the disease annually. Early diagnosis of bowel cancer in the UK is a problem because people either find it uncomfortable to discuss the symptoms of the disease or simply do not know what they are. Survival rates in the UK are amongst the lowest in Europe, with 15 percent more patients being diagnosed at a later stage of the disease compared with most other European countries. This is why Bowel Cancer UK’s work, to encourage people to recognise the symptoms of the disease and to act on their concerns so that they have the best chance of survival, is so important.

Katie Scarbrough's Fundraising Page
It is with a very heavy heart that I have to write that Katie passed away on the 2/5/13. Our girl from Gilnahirk has left a gaping hole in thousands of hearts across the world. Katie was so proud and so overwhelmed by every single donation that has been given. She asked that Team Katie keep pushing forward with fundraising in her name, so that hopefully in the future no other families have to endure the torment and grief that the Scarbrough and Allan families are going through.
Of course our thoughts and prayers are now with Stuart, Sam and Sophie, Katie's parents Joan and Leslie and Katies Brother and Sister-in-law Chris and Debbie, and also with the wider Scarbrough and Allan family circle and friends.
Katie, thank you for sharing your story. Your bravery has inspired us all. We will carry you in our hearts forevermore. You are in the air we breathe and the ice that we skate on. Love you doll.
Team Katie. Xxx
My name is Katie, I am 32 and married to Stuart. We have two children Sam 8 and Sophie 4. I am originally from Belfast but we live in Fradley just outside Lichfield in Staffordshire. I have recently been diagnosed with terminal Cancer.
I used to be a competitive Ice Skater and am an ex British Junior Champion. My friends organised two Ice Skating Shows at my home rink, at Dundonald Ice Bowl, in Belfast. The shows were more than i could have imagined them to be and raised a lot of money for charity. Please give as much or as little as you can to a very worthy cause. My chosen charities are Bowel Cancer UK and Cancer Research UK. Cancer is a horrible disease and anything we can do to raise awareness from something so life changing can only be a good thing.
This Virgin Money Giving page has been set up to fund raise and help raise awareness of Cancer in young people. Bowel Cancer is the 3rd most popular Cancer in women in the UK, behind Lung and Breast Cancer. Statistically, it is true that more people are diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in the over 60's but in reality you can get Cancer at any age. My advice if you suffer any symptoms eg blood in your poo, unexplained weight loss, change in toilet habit, a pain or lump in the tummy or extreme tiredness. Speak to your doctor, it may well be nothing but early diagnosis is key!!
Thank You soooo much to everyone who has donated so far and to all those who attended the Ice Galas. It really means a lot to me and my family. The amount of support is overwhelming and gives me the strength to keep fighting this horrible disease.
Lets Kick Cancers Ass #AMAZEBALLS :)
