Charities

Wooden Spoon Society
Wooden Spoon is a children’s charity founded in 1983 that is dedicated to helping underprivileged children and young people all over the UK and Ireland to live happier, richer lives. We comprise over 40 regional volunteer committees as well as a central national team and we boast more than 10,000 members across the UK and Ireland. The regional committees undertake local fundraising activities and ensure that the money is spent on projects in their community so that the benefit of our work is always immediate, visible and lasting. During our first 25 years, over half a million young people benefitted from more than £15 million pounds of charitable support thanks to the efforts of our staff and volunteers. We are proud of our legacy, the work we do, and our ambitious plans for the future.
The Charities Aid Foundation
The Charities Aid Foundation is a registered charity that works to create greater value for charities and social enterprise. We do this by transforming the way donations are made and the way charitable funds are managed. The Charities Aid Foundation support multiple trusts, one of which is Tomorrows. Back Up
Approximately 3 people every day have an accident or injury that results in permanent paralysis through damage to the spinal cord. Despite good medical progress there is still no cure. Paralysis is permanent. Over 40,000 people in the UK have a spinal cord injury (SCI), the majority of whom are wheelchair users. The Back-Up Trust is a small, dynamic and professional charity that runs a range of services for people with SCI as well as their friends, family and volunteers to encourage independence, self-confidence and motivation following a life changing injury.

Hi, thanks for visiting our page.

THE CHALLENGE

Our team of 4 will attempt to ride from Lands End to John O’Groats over 12 days starting on 13 June 2011.  The team is made up of Andrew Haines, Duncan Elley, Neil Porter (all Etesian Capital Partners) and Mark Holroyd (Specsavers).  We will be attempting to raise £10,000 for 3 very worthwhile charities and would love your support.

THE CHARITIES

The charities are the most important part and we will be raising money for:

- The Wooden Spoon (children’s charity)

- The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal (through the Charities Aid Foundation)

- Back-Up Trust

The funds raised will be split evenly between the 3 charities.

THE EVENT

This feat will involve riding roughly 100 miles a day (c. 8-10 hours), and is made even more difficult by the following:

- None of us have ever ridden over 60 miles before

- 2 of the team did not own a road bike until February

- We are not on an “organised” tour where teams prepare your bikes and accommodation – we will be doing it all ourselves

-  None of us are "in shape" and none of us are getting any younger!

SUPPORT

We are financing the trip ourselves other than our support vehicle which has been kindly provided by Southdowns Motorhome Centre

SPONSORSHIP

This is where you come in.  We would be very grateful if you agree to part with your hard earned cash to support 3 very worthwhile causes. This will really give us inspiration during that final hill climb of the day when everything (and we mean everything) aches and in those dark hours when we question why we ever dreamt up this mad idea. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
