Refuge opened the world’s first refuge in Chiswick in 1971. Since then we have grown to become the country’s largest single provider of specialist accommodation and support to women and children escaping domestic violence - a national “lifeline” for up to 80,000 women and children every year. Refuge provides safe, emergency accommodation through a growing network of refuges throughout the country and runs the Freephone 24-Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid. Refuge also offers services for children, individual and group counselling for abused women and community based outreach services. These include specialist services for minority ethnic communities and a growing team of independent advocates to support women through the court process. Refuge runs award winning media and advertising campaigns to raise public awareness of the issue and lobbies for better provision of services for women and children experiencing domestic violence.

LP does RideLondon-Surrey 100

As you probably know because I won't shut up about it, I'm doing a bike thing ok. I've got a place in the RideLondon-Surrey 100, an 100 mile cycling event from London, out to Surrey and back again. Yes, I failed my cycling proficiency back in the day, yes, I've bought myself some lycra, what could possibly go wrong.

Now, the charity bit - I'm riding for Refuge, a charity doing amazing work helping to raise awareness of and prevent domestic violence, but also working with those who have been affected. Domestic violence is something that affects a shocking number of people (see the stats below), so the work done by the likes of Refuge is so super important that I don't know why we don't hear more about it in the media.

1. 1/4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime

2. 1/9 will be severely physically abused this year

3. 2 women a week are killed by current or former partners in England and Wales each year

THEREFORE - Literally anything you can give, be it a single pound or your life's savings, will make a HUGE difference to people's lives up and down the country, and will also give me a reason to get on this strange thing called a bike which I do not know how to ride.

THANK YOU xoxoxoxox

For the full story, like the CLASSIC millenial I am, I've started a blog, check it outtt if you want to know more about why I'm doing this and how I'm getting on! --> https://powelltothepedal.wordpress.com
