Cystic Fibrosis Trust - The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK's only national charity dealing with all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis. It funds research to treat the symptoms of CF and to find an effective treatment. It also aims to ensure appropriate healthcare for those with Cystic Fibrosis and provides information, advice and support to people with CF and their families across the UK. Cystic Fibrosis is one of the most common, life-threatening diseases in the UK. It affects over 9,000 people and 1 in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis. If two carriers start a family, each child has a 1 in 4 chance of having Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus making it hard to breathe and to digest food. People with Cystic Fibrosis have to endure a rigorous daily treatment regime including physiotherapy to clear the chest, inhaled and injected drugs to thin the mucus and fight infections and dozens of enzyme pills to help digest food. Each week, five babies are born with CF and sadly, each week three young lives are lost. Only half of those with Cystic Fibrosis are likely to live past their late 30s, but a baby born today can expect to live longer. We seek to continually improve standards of care for people with CF; we commission cutting-edge clinical and scientific research; and provide practical and accurate information to people with CF and their families. None of this would be possible without the support of the CF community and the generosity of the public.

Discover Adventure Mount Kilimanjaro Trek

The highest freestanding mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro is also the highest mountain on the African continent at 5896m. Its snow-capped summit rises high above the dusty plains and huge permanent glaciers flow down from the summit; these views are the reward for pushing your limits both physically and mentally. Our trek takes the less-trodden Machame route, allowing us to camp and fully appreciate the splendour of our surroundings and the clear night skies. We pass through thick forest, moorland and scree enroute to the highest point, Uhuru Peak. This is a challenging trek at altitude, climbing one of the most impressive and well-known mountains in the world.

Please help us in finding a Cure for Cystic Fibrosis


My name is Leanne Harper and this year I turn 25 years. I suffer with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Cystic Fibrosis related Diabetes. I am the oldest of 20 suffers on the Island.

Living with this disease my everyday living consists of taking 20-30 tablets to help digest my food, daily physiotherapy and nebulised antibiotics to help keep my lungs free from infection, I also do regular home Intravenous Antibiotics when I have a chest infection. Two years ago I developed CF related diabetes which I have to inject insulin to control my blood sugars. I deal with this from day to day and still manage to live independently.

This October I am planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to help raise money for research into finding a cure for CF, with a Heart and Lung disease this is going to be a big physical ask from my body.
 
Supporting me on my trip will be my two cousins Jennifer and Karen Davies, also my good friend Sophie Elsley. Our training is well under way, we are hiking twice a week and using the gym. We are entering the Parish walk to help raise funds and also help with our training.
 
Our goal is to raise £7,000, this will help fund the medical and scientific research to develop a cure and provide effective treatment for CF sufferers like myself.

If you could help us with raising our target of £7k that would help not only increase the awareness of CF but help make this event a huge success.
