Imperial Health Charity
Imperial College Healthcare Charity needs your help to support St Mary's, Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte's and Western Eye hospitals. With your donations it awards grants that will make a measurable difference to the healthcare delivered to patients, as well as improve staff skills and support clinical research. The charity also manages an amazing collection of 1600 artworks which is exhibited across the five hospital sites which plays a crucial role in creating a more welcoming and healing environment for patients and staff. We work in the community to address health inequalities in areas served by the Trust. By funding local community organisations and initiatives, the Charity is able to support the trust by accessing some of the hardest to reach communities Our current projects include our £1million appeal for the Major Trauma Centre at St Mary's Hospital and our £500,000 appeal for the Birth Centre at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital.

On 10 September 2017, I am doing an Ironman triathlon that involves swimming 2.4 miles in the Welsh sea, cycling 112 miles and then running a full marathon (26.2 miles) in the hope of raising money for the hospital that saved the lives of my wife and daughter.

My wife Zoe was 32 weeks pregnant when she suffered a large bleed and was admitted to Queen Charlotte's hospital. Consultants found she had a huge blood clot in her womb but under the expert care of the hospital's team of consultants, doctors and nurses and their round the clock care, Zoe was able to continue with the pregnancy for a further 7 days.

Another bleed resulted in an emergency C-section at 33 weeks and 5 Days of pregnancy (7 weeks early), which was frightening, but we were both made to feel safe and confident in the hands of the surgeon and operating theatre staff.

However, our time at the hospital was far from over as Baby Isabella weighed just 5lb 1 oz and had problems regulating body temperature as well as her blood sugar level and she had not yet mastered sucking and swallowing. She was fed by a tube for several days and she spent time under a UV light for jaundice. During this time, the midwives on the postnatal ward went above and beyond to make sure that both mother and baby were comfortable and growing stronger. Communication was excellent and the compassion and advice given by every midwife made us feel like we were in the best possible place to help our daughter.

Thanks to the midwives showing us different feeding techniques, Isabella put on weight and we were allowed home after 8 nights. Now, she is gaining weight well and she's a very alert and happy baby. We owe a lot to Queen Charlotte's hospital and that's why I want to raise as much as possible for them.

Ironman Wales is a personal journey for me as I have completed several half Ironman event but I am especially proud to be doing it in honour of a charity that's close to my heart. With the money raised, hopefully other parents will receive as much valuable care as we did in the most difficult of circumstances.
