Here's a little bit about each of our team members and why we're taking on this challenge of challenges!

Helen Convery

I took up running just over two years ago to ease the boredom of walking - I'd got a place in the London Moonwalk, and was finding the monotony of walking training quite hard. I was totally surprised at how much I enjoyed running, and how much it helped my mental state. I was going through my second long period of depression at the time, and I knew from the literature how good exercise could be for mental well being, but to experience the benefits myself was brilliant. I signed up for a couple of 5 and 10k races, but there was always this niggle at the back of my mind. I'd always dreamed of doing the Great North Run. Dreamed, but never believed I had it in me. Well, it turns out I did, and since then I've done two 10 mile races, 7 half marathons and numerous 10ks, and have been lucky enough to get a ballot place in the London Marathon 2014. Even when registering for the ballot, I knew this would be a one off. A never again, my legs will kill me.

So why on earth have I signed up for an ultra marathon then???? To push myself? To see just what I can do? For the sense of achievement? Yes, all those and more. According to my friends, it's because I'm nuts. Bonkers, mad, insane. Off my rocker.

And that is why I'm running this (and all the other events I do) for Mind. Those comments from my friends are said jokingly, but they still hurt. Because I am mentally ill. Depression has laid me so low in the past that I came very close to ending it all - and Mind were there to help me. So in return I want to help them in their work, whether that be support for those that need it, improving the information available about mental health, or reducing the stigma surrounding it.

So yes, I'm doing this ultra for my own benefit; my own sanity. But I'm also doing it for anyone who needs help.

Lisa Lord

Is the First Lord of Ultra and Marquess of Marathon, proudly raising money for Mind. In her long list of accomplishments of all things running, this will be by far the longest ever challenge and looking back as we cross the line, Lisa will no doubt be challenging the team to take on the next mission!

Running is Lisa's passion, lifting her mind, body and soul every time she hits the trails.  Her enthusiasm for this challenge proved infectious for the others joining in!  By way of the team's payback, those 69 miles will be tough on her other soles...

Richard Parry

Is like no other running machine, pushing through the Virgin London Marathon (his 4th in a row) in 2013 in under 3:30! A true inspirational athlete, and long-term supporter of Mind, he is the powerhouse of the team and the one we can all blame for telling us about this little challenge.

Simon Brown

Running the 2012 London Marathon was an extraordinary experience and surprisingly, one I couldn't wait to do again! I was inspired by my big brother, Ed to take up the challenge, but tragically he's no longer with us. Just days after finishing the marathon and 2 days after I phoned him to thank him for the inspiration, he lost his long battle with mental illness and took his own life on 4th May 2012.  I ran the London Marathon again in 2013, raising over £5,000 for Mind in memory of Ed and I’m lucky enough to have a ballot place in the 2014 London marathon too.  I’m sure he’d be astounded at how fast and far I am running these days, I only wish he could be here to see for himself.

We all need to do more to fight the prejudice against mental health problems and increase our own understanding - the odds are that every 4th person that reads this page will have suffered in one way or another. So that makes it even more likely that someone you know is affected!

I'm raising money in aid of Mind to help in the fight to change attitudes. Ed was in the eyes of so many a pioneer, inspiration and life-loving character - it came as such a shock to everyone that knew him, me included, and that he never talked about his condition, most likely because of the stigma attached to it. Please give generously.
